LOL,as I get more mileage accumulated (age) I went for an electric start gen set, and at that I keep a 'keeper' on the battery as I want all the cranking power available. Also exercise it monthly.
Ideally I would have gone propane but $$'s interfered.
I do use only hi test (no alcohol content) and do exchange with fresh every so often using that reserve in the car which is more forgiving.
My gen set is wired via a manual switch panel that provides power to my water pump, septic pump, fridge and freezer and a couple of household circuits that allows cooking, some lighting and even my computer and TV. Life is good!
Hot water is not included, but guess what? in desperation after a 4 day outage I decided that a lukewarm shower was better than nothing I discovered that the modern hot water tanks kept water quite hot (don't add any cold mix). Life is good!
Gotta add, my gen-set is in my wood shed (an add on to my house) and when running I simply do not hear it at all. Concrete foundation does help I guess.
Also, being outside in the cold, I plug in a ceramic heater as a load* for exercise runs (recommended) which doubles as comfort for the operator! LOL.
*a gen set could lose magnetism and not perform, loads are recommended.
Gotta add, Since I was the supervisor on a major housing reconstruction project I simply asked the electrical contractor, as a favor, to let me have the switching panel at cost.(my ethics) so my switch panel cost about $135 for a square D. All up to code!
