The Queen of the Lakes - aka the longest freighter operating on the Great Lakes on one of her first voyages up the Detroit River during the 2023 shipping season.

The M/V Paul R. Tregurtha - overall Length 1013 feet, 6 inches.

Originally launched February 4th, 1981 as the M/V William J. De Lancey at a cost of approximately $60 million dollars.

Her twin diesel engines crank out over 17,000 hp. to her twin 17.5 ft diameter controllable-pitch propellers.

I found another photo of the Spartan from years ago that I took. They are passing under the bridge in Houghton and on there way to Duluth MN with brine.

2023 Shipping Season is underway:

First one out of the gate for the 2023 shipping season is the classic laker Lee A Tregurtha (1942)! From Fraser shipyard to the canal she was assisted by U.S. Coast Guard Cutter SPAR! While the Soo locks do not open until Saturday, the Lee A Tregurtha is heading to Marquette to load iron ore before exiting Lake Superior.
