I finally broke down and bought the wife a handgun. I'm not opposed to guns at all ( I'm a lifetime NRA member )but I have only ever had rifles, muzzle loaders..etc.. never seen the need for a handgun. My Mossberg will defend the home just fine.
But, I am now working alot of night shift and she wanted one so I gave in. Now I also have 2 small children and obviously don't want them to get a hold of this gun but still want my wife to have quick access.
I once saw a type of handgun safe that hangs on the wall and is disguised as a picture frame. the handgun goes behind the picture and you would have to put all four fingers in these finger holes and apply the same pressure to open.

Very quick access and also safe because it can be hung out of reach and has the pressure sensitive lock.
I have done a web search and cannot find this thing anywhere. Any Ideas where i can find this, Or, a simular device that does not have a lock and key???
thanks a million. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have the non-delux model of the gun vault delux near the bottom $129 - $149. I'm real happy with it. The delux model will also let you know if someone has tried to access it (children getting curious and trying to guess the code). You use your fingertips to press the 4 keys in the order you choose. IMO, the few seconds you lose in opening one of these safes, you gain back by having the gun in your desired position. By this, I mean that when I reach down and open the safe in the dark, I know exactly which way the grip is pointed etc., no fumbling. I also feel 100% comfortable leaving a round in the chamber.

The other one to look at is the Inprint model that uses biometrics. Pricey, but it seems pretty nice.

Shortened Long Link

Sorry about the link address. One of these days I figure out how to paste a link that isn't a foot long. Maybe someone can educate me on how to do it.

MikePA: Please review your message before posting it. It's simple not to create a long link that widens the entire thread. Just insert a descriptive word or two between the {url=http://whatever}<font color="red">Enter words here</font>{/url} instead of the entire URL. Replace parentheses {} with square brackets in previous example. Alternatively, if you use the Instant Markup language URL link, the first prompt is for the URL. The second prompt is for a description. Do not simply paste in the URL again. Type a short description of the link.Note: Following standard Internet protocols, bolding is for emphasis and should not be confused with all capital letters, which represents shouting. Also, this instruction is done in public so that others may learn as well.

Mark, I wish I could find a biometric safe like that for a long gun! Wow, that's a nice safe. I'd flip the extra few hundred for that.

I looked at that safe and really like it but I don't like the fact that it needs a power source though.
I was more looking for this

i found it after I posted this thread.
I would like for this to have a finger locking device like your safe however... Any idea where i can find one of these with the finger lock? Have you ever even seen one?

The NRA has a great safety video for kids. I would get that too, since education is the best safety. I think it is Eddie the Eagle safety video. Make sure you get your wife familiar with the weapon, and that she is competent with it. My wife is great with my Glock 26, but she informed me the other day she didn't know how to use my M1911. The M1911 is my competition pistol, but she was correct in saying she should be able to use any weapon in the house.

Good luck,

Joe

What's the web address for the one you have pictured? Thanks.

scesnick,
I've seen the one in the picture at Cheaper then Dirt. I've never seen one with a lock. Maybe that's your chance to develop one and make millions /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
With a little creative woodwork or something, you might be able to make a simple catch so someone doesn't accidently discover it. (like someone deciding to set the clock and inadvertently opens it).

I have used Simplex lock handgun safes for more than 20 years. They are simple, non-electric, quick to access but secure from unauthorized access. You can set your own pushbutton combination sequence, and if you push out-of-sequence, the combo fails. You must then manually reset it and start over.

Great for quick access, but keeps little hands out. Here are two models:

As an aside, it is always good to remember that simple is also the rule for selecting a firearm, and especially for someone who in all likelihood is not going to diligently and regularly train with it. When/if an emergency occurs, skill is required and people do not usually rise to the occasion, they will more often default to their highest level of training. My wife is not a "gun person", but has CCW'd for 25 years. Even with training, she sticks with revolvers (for handguns) because she admits that she is simply not going to practice sufficiently to acquire the reflexive manual-of-arms required for self-loading pistols.
