That is what my town highway department (mounted on a JD cab tractor) uses to mow/clear the roadside brush. I think it is basically a flail mower on a hydraulic arm. They also have a rear PTO driven one on the same beast to clear the area directly under the tractor. It is pretty cool watching them work with it. I am sure it is big $$$.

ya they use the same setups here in ohio but they also have a rear mower on them also and yes they do ditchs, hillsides, freeways, and will mow your yard when you dont mow it yourself and charge you a arm and a leg. but also it is a awesome way to do your hedge trimming if you have the money. nice pic JJ

I'd like to rig up a walk behind push mower on a mechanical telescoping boom mounted on the 3 point hitch.
Anybody ever done that and if so how did it work?

Poor arrangement, as it requires the operator to be looking back while working. Pretty much the same concept though.

The link I provided was in response to LBrowns question (on whether a 3-point version was available for compact tractors) Of course, a 3-point mounted model would be to the rear of the operator. Quite frankly, I see NO difference in concept between the one in my link and the mower in your original post.

The same manufacturer, as well as several others makes simular units that "mid-mount" on conventional full sized tractors. In any event, you wouldn't need to "look back" so much as looking to the side with either design.

I've demo-ed a side mount boom mower on a couple of occasions. Once you're up and running, an occasional glance at the mower is all that is needed for the most part, much like when using a rear mounted bush hog. The side mounted boom mower I demoed had mirrors in place to watch the mower if the operator felt so inclined.

Bottom line, they beat the heck outta using a pair of hedge clippers! ;)
