Mans best friend indeed.! I believe those words do not to begin to describe the relationship with a dog. After growing up with and always having them in my life. Even though losing them is very hard. I could not imagine life with out at least one. And yes the pain of loss causes one to reconsider a new relationship. But I have never been able to stay away. It is the best medicine. dieselsmoke1 I am sure your Dad will see it that way very soon

good luck all

"The Vet did come out. Glad that was suggested. Little fella's suffering is over"

You did the right thing.

As to getting another dog, don't push your father in law. The loss of a friend will take time to gain perspective. He may in the end choose not to have another. A choice made in haste or made for him now by another may be wrong. Give him time. I never got over the loss of my Sam and never will who was a soul mate. I love the two dogs we have now and I am glad that we got them. J

Having the right vet makes things easier. About two months after we put down Dusty we recieved a letter from the University of Missouri Veterinary School. It informed us that a donatinon to the school had been made in Dusty's name by our vet.

dieselsmoke,

Please accept my sympathies. That's a difficult decision to make, but a necessary one. We accept that responsibility wnen we accept responsibilities for our animals' lives. It's a job few pet owners can avoid.

Thank you for caring for the little fellah.

Fortunately, that's not a permanent decision; it's one that can be made a day at a time. If and when he's ready, he'll be ready. It's kinda like that old saying, "It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved." When he craves the joy a pet can bring, then he'll be ready.

Best wishes.

Man my heart is with you, I have a real soft place in my heart for dogs. That piece Junkman posted almost brought tears. Here is another one my dear departed mother came up with when we had to have our Miss Bear put to sleep. Not sure where she found it but I can't read it without becoming emotional.

I remember bringing you home. You were so small and cuddly with your tiny paws and soft fur.

You bounced around the room with eyes flashing and ears flopping. Once in a while, you’d let out a little yelp just to let me know this was your territory.

Making a mess of the house and chewing on everything in sight became a passion and when I scolded you, you just put your head down and looked up at me with those innocent eyes as if to say: “I’m sorry, but I’ll do it again as soon as you’re not watching.”

As you got older, you protected me by looking out the window and barking at everyone who walked by.

When I had a tough day at work, you would be waiting for me with your tail wagging just to say “Welcome home. I missed you.” You never had a bad day and I could always count on you to be there for me.

When I sat down to read the paper and watch TV, you would hop on my lap looking for attention. You never asked for anything more than to have me pat your head so you could go to sleep with your head over my leg.

As you got older, you moved around more slowly. Then one day, old age finally took its toll, and you couldn’t stand on those wobbly legs anymore. I knelt down and patted you lying there, trying to make you young again. You just looked up at me as if to say you were old and tired and that after all these years of not asking for anything, you had to ask me to do one last favor.

With tears in my eyes, I drove you one last time to the vet. One last time you were lying next to me.

For some strange reason you were able to stand up in the animal hospital - perhaps it was your sense of pride.

As the vet led you away, you stopped for an instant, turned your head and looked at me as if to say: “Thank you for taking care of me.”

I thought, “No - thank YOU for taking care of ME.”

I keep getting drawn back to these posts and this has just touched a chord in my heart because it is so true... the only difference is that I always stayed with my pets till the very end and have always been the one to carry them out one that last time. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
