Help, Truck won't start when it rains out

Is there a way to test the ignition module?

I don't know if you can test them or not. There are two modules for those trucks. One has a green connector on the module end of the wires, the other one is blue. The blue is the most common. Autozone.com lists the blue one for $25 in your local store.

Thanks a lot guys, yes, jumper for selenoid is excelent idea, I'll pull one together. Will make this sort of work (with a 1986 truck there is typically a bunch of opportunities to use) much easier.

I purchased a coil while I was out today. Can't hurt, was not a lot of money and can always return.

I'll start to diagnose either tonight or next weekend.

Thanks again guys,

Joel

the ford i had did the same thing it had the ignition module mounted right below the distributor cap actually on the distributor assembly. after replacing this it ran fine, this era ford was known for this a friend who is a ford mechanic actually had another module i borrowed for testing. if you'rs is like this remember to use the dielectric grease that comes with the module it makes the dist assy a heat sink if not done properly the module will fail due to the heat generated by itself.

Could be the plug wires.

Start it up when it's dark out and see if you see blue sparks coming from the wires...and also at night while it's running, take a spray bottle with water in it & spray it on the wires.

I am with the others. I had a Toyota truck that would not start when it rained, ended up being the plug wires. Only part I put on that truck other than a clutch, brakes, tires, oil, and gas. Great truck. Traded it on a 1996 Civic with 180,000 miles. I put about 160,000 of those miles on it.

I have also heard of the 80's Fords having the ignition modules when hot or raining.

Its going to be one or the other.
