Hello. I live in Manitoba, Canada and I own a Universal 560 (Long 360) in U.S.A). I believe it's a 1985/6. The Power steering pump died on me and I ordered a new one from the Malpas company in England (cheapest price believe it or not!). Problem is that the input and output points on the new pump are on opposite sides from the original! I checked with the manufacturer (Sparex) via the Malpas people in England and they say this is the pump for my tractor. Now, if the hydraulics were hoses this wouldn't be such a problem. However (there's ALWAYS a however or I wouldn't be typing this!), the "hoses" on these tractors are steel pipes and the connections are via what looks like miniature thermostat housings.
First question; has anyone else run into this situation? How did you handle this? I believe Sparex is an American company so I'd imagine someone out there has used this pump to replace the existing one.
My idea would be moving the pipes. That would mean cutting each side at some point, adding some kind of flexible hose "in the middle" and reconnecting. I've been told that the input side has very little pressure (Is this true???) so a simple hose of the correct size could be double hose clamped. The output side is another matter. I believe the inner diameter of the output is 10mm. Could I double flare the existing pipe and add some line of the correct size?
Any help would be appreciated as winter is on it's way and I need this thing to snowblow my 1/4 mile lane. Thanks in advance.
