John Deere 4520 CUT
Hello everyone - I'm very pleased that I have found a good deal on a Cozy Cab for my JD 4520. For those of you who aren't familiar with Cozy Cabs (at least for the 20 series of JD CUTS), they are essentially fully assembled cab units that must be picked up and placed on the tractor in one fell swoop. And there is my problem - I don't have a convenient way to hoist up the cab for installation. I'm sure someone else has already run into something like this, and aside from renting a hoist, does anyone have a clever idea on how to tackle this problem? The guy I'm getting the cab from said it weighs about 700#.

Block and tackle and a barn rafter?
Rent a hoist. Get someone with a bigger tractor and pallet forks to lift it /suspend it over your tractor and lower it into place.

The doors of my barn are a few inches too short. So I could put the cab on using a rafter w/block and tackle, but not have a way to get out. Unless I deflated my tires and rolled out (what could go wrong). I might just rent a material lift or forklift and be done with it.

Do what is safest and don't look back! Then it is done and you can enjoy it!;)

Have you got a good sized tree limb handy that you can attach a pulley to to lift your cab? That's what I did before I set up a hoist inside my garage. I used the winch on my ATV to lift and lower the cab as required. I'm working on a smaller scale that you but the same principle applies. I put the cab on for the winter and take it off for the summer. It only takes about two hours each way.

Hummm...probably depends on how often you want to put it on, take it off.

If it won't fit in the barn so you can use the rafters and you only want to put it on once and leave it on I'd rent something to lift it.

If you want to put it on and take it off at your leasure I'd maybe check out a gantry crane. Northern Tool has a bunch to choose from.

gantry crane from Northern Tool + Equipment

Tree limb idea definately looks safe

Sling a rope between a couple of stout tree's and hoist it up with a come-along?
Rent a couple of sheet rock jacks and raise it up with them supported across a couple 4x4's then drive between and lower it down?
Build a couple of "A" frame stands on either side of it. Then hook up and over the top with ropes. Have a truck on each side of the A frame as they back up it lifts up the canopy. Drive under it have them drive forward and lower it back down into place.
How is it getting delivered? They have to unload it some how. See if it can be unloaded onto your tractor.

got a friend with a slide-in pickup bed camper? Look at the jacks that are used to raise it so you can back in under it...

or, you could always attach it to two beams and lift the beams with five bottle jacks and a lot of cribbing

This is the reason one builds a garage with 12' 6" ceilings and a I beam from one side to the other. Attach the trolly, chain CM come along and everything gets changed from car bodies to jeep hard tops. I hung the Bradco backhoe from it as well when making the attaching mounts and the 611 is no feather weight.
I would like to add an electric hoist with hand control that would lift 2k. The search continues.
An overhead hoist is just too handy not to have.
