Hi. I am an environmental scientist trying to fix things on my property with a big learning curve. I need help on my single 16'gate. We have a millings driveway and the gate keeps rubbing into the driveway and catching. I'm thinking a wheel like a bicycle will attached might help lift that heaviest unsupported end up enough to take care of issue. It is unusable at this point. Any suggestions and clear instructions as to what to do. Thanks.

Welcome...and good luck...

Your problem common...caused by the gate post leaning and allowing the gate to sag into the ground. Depending on conditions, solutions can include the following...we need photos of your problem to be more specific...:

Use a ratchet to pull hinge post back vertical.

Yes. a wheel can be used to hold the end of the gate up, but the wheel will cut a groove into the ground so you need a firm ground support unaffected by rain

Replace the gate post and reposition the gate 10 inches or so above the ground to avoid dragging and wire the top of the gate post such that it cannot move against the weight of the gate.

Put a gate latch holder on the latch post so that the weight of the gate is NOT on the hinge post all the time, only when opening and shutting.

Put a block to rest the gate on at the point where the gate is fully open to keep weight off of hinge post and keep it from leaning.

Good luck!!

Checking the hinge post for plumb is a good idea, if it hasn't moved and it is a chain link gate there should be a truss rod in there to level it up. The fencing section at the box stores or maybe any hardware store might have a swiveling tail wheel style assembly that will attach easily. Sixteen feet is fairly long, there should be two bays with a truss rod in each bay, at least.
If you have the room you might consider converting it to a roll gate, quite a bit less impact on the road surface that way.

You could use a backstay to keep the gate post level. Usually a cable stay over the main boom (pipe) to keep the 16 foot gate from sagging of its own weight also. Put turnbuckles in the stays, so that adjustments can be made to keep the tension where you need it. I have seen plenty of people put wheels on, but as said if the gate is opened a lot, you cut a nice semicircle in the ground with the wheel.
