any body know if there is any thing , repellent, or such that will help keep these little buggers off u? i have been bit a few times over the years and never much of reaction from the sting, BUT sunday morning, i was working next to the house and osmething bit me behind th ear (found a hornet nest next day) with in 10 min i was broke out in welts all over , vision was blurry, and every thing looked yellow, got dizzy and light headed, and breathing was labored. wife call 911 and they rushed me hospital, blood pressure was very low also. got the whole treatment . oxygen, a shot of something, IV drip, breathing treatment spent 6 hrs in hosp. before they would let me go home. so back to original question . is there anything that you can use to help repel these critters?

Wow, sorry to hear of your woes. Hope you are better now.
I like spectracide wasp spray, it shoots at least 10 feet and knocks em' down quick.
Maybe a bee keeper's hat and garb? Or maybe your ready to move up to a cab model now. Go ahead, you deserve it!

Aren't we good at helping others spend their money?

I wish I had a cab with cold AC for bee protection!!!
Take care,
Kyle

That would probably be epinephrine. You may want to keep a shot of that handy. Bee alergies usually get worse everytime you get a sting. Having a shot available can save your life if your highly alergic. Ask you doctor.

No, not to laugh, but there is nothing that will stop them. The only sure fire repellent I have found is my two feet going the other direction in rapid fashion. J

Wow, I know the feeling, same thing happened to me last summer with Yellowjackets and it was quite an experience- I now carry an epi pen as others mentioned. I remember as I was being driven in the ambulance to the hospital after receivng the shot, the EM tech told me that a side effect of the shot was that I might "feel some anxiety"-- well, having passed out, been loaded in an ambulance with no blood pressure might have caused a bit of anxiety all by itself the but reassurrance was good-- seriously, the techs did a great job getting me stabilized and treated.

On Sunday, I was picking blackberries and was stung on the top of my foot, looked like a wasp but not sure as I didn't get a good look when it flew away-- thought I was in for the routine again so went back to the house, sat down and applied ice to the sting, then waited with the pen just in case. Good news, other than the sting at the site of the bite, nothing else happened so while I may still be allergic, at least it didn't happen this time.

I haven't found anything that was efective over the long term to keep these types of things away-- glad to hear you're okay!

Frank.... the only thing that keeps them away is cold weather. Glad to hear that you are OK. I have experience this with many people when I was on the ambulance and once myself many years ago. You might never have another episode like this, but it is good to know how you react, so in the future, you can take precautions. I have suggested to people that are effected by stings that if it happens and they are not certain as to what their reaction will be over the next hour to have someone drive them to the ER and just sit in the waiting room without checking in. If you start to have a reaction, you are already at the ER and all you have to do is ask for help. If no reaction, then you just leave and have no ER bill to pay, because you didn't check in. Try to stay away from those "stingers" and replace your soft drink in the cup holder with a can of wasp spray.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I have multiple cans available. I keep on at each garage door entrance and house entrance. One on the Bota if I am going into an area where I might encounter them. I buy a case when on sale and am set for the next 3 or 4 years. It is inexpensive compared to the ER visit. Even with insurance, the deductible is about $250 per visit!!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

hear u junkman and i have cans in the garage and the back hall and i use them frequently, bu this was a newer nest i never noticed, on the house siding up under an overhang. was just starting to dig with a shovel (removing some sod) never saw it at all, but the nest is gone now but i am still very cautious. funny we usually just have wasp around but they are usually up high and don't bother you if u are not right near them, but this hornet just dropped right down and attacked. and as someone mentioned i also find SPECTRACIDE to be one of the best.

Funny this should come up now, because I was attacked pretty good Sunday night. We were getting ready to go out on the boat to watch the fireworks display, when the well-pump started acting up. Was walking towards the well house, which is next to the tractor barn, when out of the blue a black wasp zaps my ankle. OUCH. Wife got some ice and a benadryl; stinging but not too bad. Yet. A couple of minutes later one divebombs my head and zaps me 3 times on the back of the neck and head. But my ankle sting has been the worst, since my foot swelled up so bad that I am just now able to walk well and get a shoe on it. The ones on my neck and head just swelled up some with a little local pain.

I have the hardest problem with my tractor barn - getting the tractor or riding mower out. Now it's semi-open so I can usually get those nests pretty easily. But the end of the barn has an enclosed shop, where I usually keep my golf cart. It is a real problem because there are so many places for those suckers to hide and build their nests in there. I always have a can of wasp spray with me, but I was at least 20 ft. away from the barn when I got zapped, and had other stuff on my mind. Wonder if some type of fogger might eliminate them? I could wear long-sleeves and a beekeepers outfit all the time, but would end up in the hospital anyways from heat stroke this time of year.

Man, that was a close call! Glad to hear you're okay now, but jeez!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

My wife took a picture of me once trying to cut down a tree while being divebombed by wasps. Take a cut, wave the chainsaw in the air to ward off the pests, take another cut! I call it "being focused." She calls it lunacy!

Anyway, I don't mess with them in daylight anymore. I just find the nest and come back at night with a blowtorch in one hand and a spray bottle of water in the other. Torch the nest and use the water for fire control. No mess to clean up.

Pete
