Horses need to have shelters to stay out of the wet and cold.

Then why aren't all of the mustangs out in Oregon dead?

There are as many opinions about Horses requiring shelter as there folks responding - and similar concerning barbed wire...

I have horses - first in Calif, then Virginia, then Texas, and now in western Colorado. I ALWAYS provide shelter. True, it's not really "required" - witness all the wild horses living out West... However, they have the option of seeking the shelter of trees or whatever when there's inclement (cold/wet) weather.. When you OWN a horse, and keep it locked up in a pasture, it doesn't have the same options a wild horse does. So the OWNER needs to provide the shelter.

And as far as barbed wire goes, while it's true MOST of the time, horses will stay away from it - the first time you have a horse spooked by lightning and it goes thru a barbed wire fence - you'll wish the barbs weren't there. I had one get cut up pretty bad one time - so now I always use BARBLESS wire, with ELECTRIC on top. The Electric is to keep the horses from leaning on or trying to reach thru to get at the greener grass on the other side.

But, then again, as I said above, this is just my opinion - and I'm just as opinionated as the next person.

Good luck.

Remember that horses can always find new ways to get hurt. We just try to prevent as many injuries as possable Randy

Thanks for the replies guys, you've given me something to think about.

This farmer is the same guy who used our pasture for his cows. Long story, but when we moved here, we were nice, and if you read any of my threads on that topic here from the past, I think you'd agree we were taken advantage of.

This time however, I won't be taken advantage of.

Bottom line, if we say yes, a shelter will be put up for the horses (even though they aren't ours), and this year most of the fence line will be replaced (at my labor, his equipment, new posts and no barbed wire). Again, that's if he says yes. That's also if my wife says yes:)

Carefull on the wire replacement. Get a tetinus shot or booster. Mine were all over the place, including in the ground.

I only work on the wire in the fall.

Best of luck. Any animal on your own property is a joy to watch.

"Then why aren't all of the mustangs out in Oregon dead?"
Because the mustangs out in Oregon have many natural shelters for them to stay out of the wet and cold.

Maybe out of the wind, but I doubt out of the wet and cold. The barn is the last place my mustangs go when it is wet and cold. They seem to love being right out in the middle of it. Also, it's not uncommon for one of them to go swimming when the temperature climbs to 40 degrees in winter.

I agree you should provide a shelter, I'm just saying it tends to make the humans feel better, not the horses.

mjfox6,
How do you like having mustangs? What do you use them for, riding? I was looking into getting one or two, but I would like my son to be able to ride them and I am not sure if this is the right breed for him.

You can judge a man by the way he treats his animals.

I wouldn't have any other breed of horse. They are highly intelligent and curious. Ours are for riding, they just haven't been ridden outside of the round pen yet. You don't hear too many people who have spent the time training a mustang say that it wasn't worth it, but it does take time. Of course, it depends on the horses personality, your training style and skill.
