Kubota BX24
So I was having a problem with my BX24 and while I have solved the root problem I still don't know how the system works. The problem was that when I had the brush hog attached to the tractor, it would stall and not restart if I got off the seat. I have figured out that the PTO engagement lever was really stiff due to a lot of mud and dirt built up around the pivot point of the lever which made the lever not put very much force up against the switch that tells the tractor that the PTO is disengaged. So I have solved the problem but what I don't understand is that this stalling problem would only occur after I had actually attached the brush hog to the tractor and not while I had the BH on. I'm sure that the switch was not being made properly all the time so how come it doesn't stall whenever I got off the tractor, BH or Brush hog? It seem that the tractor somehow knows that the 3 point hitch is in use but I can't imagine how it knows. Anybody?

I dont have a bx but I do have an L. If your machine is an HST and the pedal is not exactly centered the idiot switch in the seat will shut it off. Also, if the pto is turning the tractor will shut off if the same seat switch is tripped. I dont know if this helps or not? I would play around with it since you got the mud out of where it shouldn't be at though.

As already stated...there is a seat kill switch.

You have 2 seat switches on the BX24. The pto engaged adds another safety switch to on so if the seat switches is not seated properly or has bad contacts it would kick in with pto engaged. I would start by pulling the connectors off the seat switches ( the white one and gray one ) and check the alignment in hole and measure the resistance of switch in both open and closed position. try wiggling the switches and see if the reading fluctuates and replace that one.

I thought Seat Switches were only on Lawn Mowers.

It doesn't sound like a contact issue. He's getting off the seat with the PTO engaged. for the OP, once it stalls you need to reset. PTO in neutral, clutch in, drive pedal in neutral before resuming.

The BH runs off the hydraulics PB loop (no turning shaft) and not the rear PTO... Its a safety so you don't get your arms, clothes etc wrapped around a turning shaft

I realize that there are seat switches and I understand that if you get off the tractor with the PTO enganged that the tractor will shut off and not restart. This is all normal operation. What I was referring to is the fact that I know that my PTO disengaged switch was not working correctly and that sometimes it would register that I had the PTO engaged even though the lever was in the disengaged position and that explains why the tractor would shut off and not restart after getting off the seat. My only question is why does this fault only show up with the brush hog on and not while using the BH. The PTO switch was flaky enough to not be engaging even though I wasn't using the PTO lever but it never stalled with BH mounted and only started doing it again when I removed the BH and installed the brush hog. Could the fact that the hydrolic line is unplugged from the BH and plugged into the 3 point lift mechanism let the tractor know that the PTO is being used.

So I guess I answered my own question. I reinstalled the BH today and did some tests. First I checked that the PTO does drive with the BH hydrolics connected. I also verified that the unit does in fact shut down if you engage the PTO while off the seat with the BH attached. so I guess all this time with the BH attached the PTO disengaged switch was being made so the stalling problem did not present itself. It probably wasn't until I started using the PTO lever again that the switch wasn't being made and the stalling problem started again.

It sure sounds that way. I really didn't think there was any way that the tractor would know whether or not there was something mounted to the PTO, at least on that model.

Ha I wish. No. there are two and there is a way to "bypass" switches if you want to use pto chipper. lift seat into bh position and start up engine. engage pto and chip away. When the switches are depressed, and pto engaged, engine will shut off. but if one of the two seats is not in correct place and its halfway or the pto switch mount is bent, it will shut off engine. It might be the pto switch bent as if the 3 pt implement is lifted, the BX frame is flexing just enough to make safety switch is kicking in.
When BH is on, it goes on the BH subframe and weight is distributed more evenly, not on 3 pt at all.

Look right for last couple months now I have similar issue, with my pto switch, there are times engine shuts off when I get off. I cant restart it unless I pull back on the pto lever to more off position and I know its either bent or bad switch. I am waiting for a downtime (mud time) in the fall so I can start looking it over and fix it for good. This is why I suggested get a meter and start checking the safety switches starting with seat ones first then move over to pto. The BX has no way of knowing if anything is connected via pto shaft except for the lever selection you pick for mid ,rear or both. BX is pretty simple and there is nothing magic about the pto shaft connected or not.
