I want to check the adjustment of my 1210's clutch and the book calls for around 1 inch of free play. (the book is in the garage right now)

How do you measure the free play? Is this at the top of the travel?

With cars, I have always adjusted by when it engaged as you let the clutch out. Like 1 inch from the floor and the car moved was about right.

Any opinions or help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Adjust to one inch of free play as your manual instructs. Free play is measured at the foot pad of the pedal and is measured from the fully returned (top) position to the point where the release bearing contacts the pressure plate fingers. This can be best felt by depressing the clutch pedal with a couple fingers until significant resistance is felt.

Thanks for the clarification. I know what you mean about the resistance at the top of the travel. I will try that.

So basically the 1 inch of free travel is your insurance that you are not continuously engaging the throw out bearing.

Thanks for the help!

Correct about the insurance. Your old method of 1" from the floor doesn't insure crucial free play at the foot-off-the-pedal position.
