Just looking at the specs on a Bush Hog 307 7' rotary cutter and the HP requirements for lift type is 60 and pull type is 40. Why would the HP needs vary?

Manufacturers also take into consideration the possible weight of the items when recommending horsepowers for the use of the machine.

I wouldn't want one of those on the back three point of any 40 engine horsepower tractor that I can think of even those that boast of their great weight!

For safe operation it still isn't enough even with a loader and a bucket full on a hill!

Yeah, I can understand weight or size needed for the tractor. Seems like the cutter manufacture would make some recommendation other than HP since you can get pretty good HP in such small tractors now. I don't think it's 60, but can you imagine the 7' lift type behind something like a JD 4720..

I was talking with a fella over the weekend and he said a Kubota dealer told him with a front snowblower you need a minimum of 39hp.????

I guess my question is....Does a mid-pto or front-pto transfer less hp than a rear pto.??

I told the guy that the dealer is full of crap.

(sorry to hijack, though it is sort of the same) Carry on.

One of my neighbors has a 4720 cab and an MX7 cutter. I tried it out one day this summer and it felt stable, kind of suprized me too. I think I can manuever better than he can but most of his property is all bottomland.

Basically...you're right...dealer is probably full of it. There is a degree of power loss, of course, as it would be with any transmission of power.
Now, that guy you were talking to may have left out one very important factor...the size of the blower. Something like an 8' front blower may require considerable horsepower.

As far as the power requirements for a cutter...a 30 PTO HP tractor may run a 7 or 8 foot cutter...might not be able to lift it though. A 40 PTO HP tractor, being larger and heavier (probably) then that 30 HP machine may lift cutters that size easily. That's just an example with arbitrary cutter widths, so we don't need dozens of replies stating how easily their 30 PTO HP tractor lifts those size cutters.
