Hello,
I've just signed up for a free month of Hughesnet satelite internet and I'd like to figure out if my usage will exceed the monthly quota. The system has been in for about five days. My wife works online from home and we've streamed a movie. We've been online at least 24 hours already but not necessarily uploading or downloading. The service control center site that lets you monitor usage hasn't shown any change. Does Hughesnet give you unlimited access the first month and then stick you with a quota? Which programs use up quota even when not in use but on?

Thank you

Type in the address bar:

192.168.0.1

A screen will come up telling you all your Hughes net usage to date.

If you stream movie sin the highest resolution they will use almost 2g of your 20g limit. If you are using Netflix, log onto your Netflix account and change to the lowest resolution which uses a fraction of the other one.

I have the system prior to Gen 4 and don't understand if the advertised advantages are worth the change.
The higher speed is not guaranteed and the 15 megabit possibility is only for their highest priced offer.
My system is like 350MB per day download limit but free downloads between 3 AM and 7 AM.
No limit for uploads but they are slow.
It is about $75 per month with no equipment rental fee.
They have a "Use Meter" that sets in the taskbar that shows me how much I have left of a 48 hour period at any given moment.
It resets to 100% every night if I have not used over 50% of the 2 day limit.

Our only option is Hughes.net and my son is taking a lot of on-line courses so we had to go to Gen4, it is a lot faster with more allowances figured over the month rather than 24 hour period, it has worked well for us. We would, however go with something like DSL if it was available.

Can you get Verizon cell signal at your house? You may want to consider the Millenicom.com hotspot/mifi plan - its 20gb of Verizon broadband internet for $70/mth

NO daily caps and our signal never really slows down (like it will with satellite) - On 4g we getting about 10Mb download (the other night i got 17Mb down and 10Mb up - which is abnormal)..

To answer your question about usage - 2 of us here and we use the above MIFI - we dont stream movies or music, we dont watch any videos (news or otherwise), no youtube.. We both are on the computer at night - we use about 15gb/mth

Brian
