Havent ever heard them called poppet. Always called "pin" style and "ball" style.

Not sure for your usage, but in the snow plowing business, we stay away from ball style. They dont last long when subjected to pressure spikes from shock loading. Pin styles fair much better

So they function the same? It's a matter of durability?

They function the same.

Poppet is the correct term . The QD's are either ball type or poppet.

Poppet is supposed to be better.

Poppet have a better flow rate.

Poppet style valve prevents uncoupled leakage of hydraulic
fluid

Poppet: Refers to the type of valve used to stop fluids from flowing when the two mating parts of a quick disconnect are separated. Chosen for its simplicity in both function and manufacturability.

The poppet style quick disconnect is the most common type available today

Unique poppet/seat design allows no extrusion gap, minimizing seal degradation under extreme pressures. Stainless steel valve springs and retainer rings are standard.

The body (coupling) half can be mated to either a ball valve or poppet valve ISO male tip (nipple).

Poppet style QD's seem to leak less and are more standard in OEM applications, some say they are interchangabke and compatible with the ball style, but I've found that not to be always true.

That is what I have found as well.

One of the best things about meyer snow plows is there is sooo many around. IF you damage a blade, Just borrow one or hook up to someones back up. But it never fails, the couplings are different from what you have. And I have not found ANY ball style that will interchange with the pin style.

I'm setting up a cylinder to raise/lower my cultivator on a Case 1070. I was confused when purchasing the male connectors because there was a ball-type and a "poppet" type. What is the difference between the two?
Any help is appreciated!

The difference is in the "button" on the tip of the male coupler. The poppet design is newer, and supposedly allows for improved flow characteristics. Manufacturers recommend that you use poppet male with a female that is designed for the poppet, and a ball male with a ball female, but you can't really inspect the female and see which one is which. You can only identify them by part number.

For example, Parker adds a "P" to the end of their part number when it's a poppet-style coupler. 4050-4 is a 1/2" ball-style female ag coupler, then the same coupler for a poppet-style will be 4050-4P.
