I need to change my Hyd/Tranny fluid in my 8n. On the nseries website its was mentioned that 80w-90 EP was the preferred fluid.
What does the EP stand for? Can I use 80w-90 without the EP noted?

I think the EP stands for Extreme Pressure.

I need to change the oil in mine too.
But I need a source for oil and what kind.
Called yesterday about hydrolic fluid.
They said type 32 or some kind of multimix.
Forget exactly what he called it.

Looked at gear oil in Walmart a few days ago.
It had the GL5 on the bottle so I know that's not what I want.

I'm about afraid to go with the 134d oil.
If I got any leaks I don't want to make them worse.
Axle seals leak and so does front tranny seal.

So what oil do I need and where do I get it.
Edumacate me about oil.

You dont want to use an EP lube. That will have addatives that will attack the yellow metal in the trans/pump. Eather the 134D[a bit thin if there is wear] or 90weight GL-1 would be best for an old N. Wile your at it, make sure the shift boot, and fill cap gasket are good. Helps keep the water out of the fluid.

Use just a straight 90 wt gear oil in that old 8N. It's nice and thick. Great for those old seals in the tranny........

Ditto.

In the 9n, 2n, and 8n.. use 90wt gl-1 ( gl-3 would be acceptable.. but I doubt you'll find it ).

Also.. TSC sells a 'ford 39-52' tranny oil.. that is acceptable.

Gl-5 oils can attack yellow metal. The belly of your diffy is a scotch yoke piston pump.. guess what.. all the internals are yellow metal... this pump is NLA.. and parts are salvage only.

Penzoil DOES make a special purpose gl-4 that claims to not attack yellow metal. I've seen a spec sheet.. but never the product on the shelf.

Napa carries gl-1 90wt as part # 65-205 5 g pail.

Only fill the sump dill oil dribbles out a bottom bolt hole in the round side cover plate. This might be.. 4.5 g's but keeps oil from pooling around old axle seals and old tranny input shaft seals.

And yes.. the thinner 134d or equivalent transdraulic oil is fine.. but if you have leaks.. the'll get worse.. and if your hyds are weak.. they will be weaker.. as that pump was made to pump 90wt... etc.

Hmmmm......NAPA looked at me like I had three heads (they're used to seeing folks with two). I can get 80w-90 EVERYWHERE at about $30-$35 for 5 gallons. I cannot find straight 90w anywhere. Are there any online oil dealers?
My fluid is REALLY bad I think I'm going to change it to 80w-90 while I look for 90w.

Your NAPA store should be able to order it for you with the number Soundguy posted. They did not stock it at the store I went to but ordered it and I had it two days later.
