hydraulic motor for capstan winch

looking for advice on my hydraulic capstan skidding winch. i've done a fair bit of research this past month, knowing nothing of hydraulic systems before. I plumbed in my own power beyond circuit and chose a 11.3cui charlynn s series motor.


everything seemed to be working as it should but i have very little torque and the hydraulic motor stalls fairly easily. I'm lucky if i have around 100lbs of pulling force before stalling out the motor.

i hooked up a gauge to it and i only get 500psi before the hyd motor stalls out.

i recently changed all fluids and filters, and every other component is working fine at 2000psi.

my hydraulic knowledge is very limited, but i figured this would be an easy project to begin with.

from what ive seen others do, i figured hooking up the motor to power beyond without any valves was ok, but now am worrying about back pressure from the rockshaft when operating the 3pt.

is my motor pooched if i’m seeing only 500psi under load?

any tips would be great!

You need to reokace the hyd. motor with a closable valve, or even just a cyclinder, to determine if your Power beyond circuit is faulty or if the motor is bad.

the motor is second hand, power beyond circuit should be ok if 3pt hitch moves fine?

For myself, I would just move the motor over to another Known Good tractor.

So there is no valve, you just have the motor hooked directly to the PB loop?

yes, i have seen others plug their norwood skid winch directly to pb without a valve. one tractor was a 2025, similar hydraulic system as 1023.

i didn’t feel the need to control the flow as the speed is only 60rpm at max throttle.

That is an interesting plumbing setup. I do not know how the power beyond setup on a JD 1023E is. However i will assume that there is a relief valve up stream from the capstan that would prevent over pressurization. If not, you will figure it out quick enough (LVA19035 is around $800). I will also assume that the power beyond circuit is set up correctly. If the motor is stalling out at 500 PSI then this indicates you have significant fluid bypassing the motor and that is bad. You will need to rebuild the motor or replace.

Smeal water well 4T pump hoists also used a 11.3 cu in hydraulic motor on their catheads and they could lift 3200 lbs plus with 1" rope. I really appreciate the control that a cathead gives.

pb loop is routed from the scv to the rock shaft. it uses the scv relief valve. the motor flows into the rockshaft valve.

while the motor is running, i still have control of the 3pt hitch, although the motor stops while lifting. and psi reaches my system pressure of 2000psi. should i be worried about the back pressure created by the 3pt on the motor? this motor has no case drain. i’m worried this may be the cause of blowing the motor? or should it not be a worry when i get a new motor

Then it does point towards motor leaking or bypassing all the oil. Simple test while trying to pull a load check the hose temp (oil) temp exiting the motor vs entering. If leaking the exit hose will get warm or hot.

thanks, it ended up being the motor i got second hand. the guy ended up allowing me to exchange for a new one that he also had. works great now!

I'd appreciate a video and some specs on the hydraulic motor. I have wondered how useful a capstan would be for general use, like moving things around in the barn (I have a chain hoist on an I beam in the barn, but that only works in 2 dimensions). Or, my recent thought it to use a capstan to control a post pounder (pull the rope to lit a heavy weight, then release to drop the weight).
