I like my chain wrench for tight filters;

+1 on the chain wrench. I have the silver one (or just like it) from Lou's post. You can beat on it with a hammer or add leverage to it (within reason). Expect the filter to get crushed, so this is a one-way trip. They are always super tight from the factory.

Why would someone tighten the filter that much?

I have used a John Deere strap wrench forever. My dad handed it down to me.
Works like a charm, Might last forever and is easy & small to store.
