When you're fifty seven this is something to brag about.

And I did it without medication!

Oh, I believe you. Anyone who would jump out of a plane would probably still be attempting "that" in public. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I hadn't been on a dirt bike since late 84. I gave my Yamaha 465 to a friend when I left California. I just couldn't see where it would be much fun in Texas. I raced desert in California.

But two weeks ago we agreed to meet my son's family at El Mirage dry lake in Southern California. He rolled out a 400 Suzuki sport four wheeler and a two fifty four stroke Yamaha bike.

The Yamaha is unbelievably fun. I can see where kids today get away with all those crazy tricks and jumping they do. It was much kinder and gentler than the old 465 in the handling department. I could learn to enjoy one of those in my life. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Harv:

Years ago....actually eons ago, I raced with Jack Penton. I raced an ISDT bike, a 250 Penton/KTM. Had a 400 CR Husky too. Earned the nickname "Flip" which I still use today.

Remember though, your 50+ body don't heal like you did when you were a kid.

I swear there is NOTHING this man can not do. Way to go Harv, you are more than inspiration, you are a joy to watch.

Oh and at 47 I would never do that. Had a road bike in my young and dumb years, about all I need of it.

My first dirt bike was a Kawasaki 238 Green Streak. I think it had thirty horsepower and three inches of travel at both ends. It was like riding a burro at speed. A very very excited burro. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif That was the middle of 1969.

We flipped on a hill climb. I woke up forty five miles later in an emergency room. Broke a Bell open face and some bones. I've believed in helmets every since. In fact as my son and his friend was dressing up the only question I had was "gotta helmet that'll fit me?" /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I stayed away from them for many years. But in the early eighties I ended up with a Honda three fifty single scrambler through some trades and bad luck. One time out to the desert and I knew it would kill me sooner than later. So I went down and bought the 465 Yamaha and started racing desert. That was a ton of fun.

Reality hit on the starting line at a Grand Prix at the old Riverside Raceway. I raced veteran open novice class. There were about four hundred bikes lined up with all the classes of veterans (thirty to fifty year olds).

The race was a sixty minute moto with about a fifty fifty split between desert and asphault surfaces. The start was when a banner was dropped by two guys standing in the back of a pickup a couple of yards down the ways.

When they raised the banner we would have our helmet on and be standing behind our bike with one hand on our helmet and the other on the seat of our bike in front of us. The kick starter would be up and motor would be dead.

At the drop of the banner we'd come over the seat, land on the kick starter as we grabbed the clutch. Releasing the clutch and shifting into second before the motor was fully revved. After all a quarter mile or less down the track we'd be funneled into a narrow area. Much better to be in front.

As I stood there waiting for the banner to be raised I looked to my left and right. It seemed to me everyone else had family and friends with them. And if something happened to me out there they'd only have the information I'd given them to notify family.

Sorta took the fun out of that form of racing. So I went back to dirt tracks and cars. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey! 5030
I did some of that same stuff when I was much younger. Had idea's of going into ISDT riding. Family kept me on the straight and narrow. But did buy a couple of Husky's from Piasecki in Toledo. Good memories. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
"Flip"
I'll bet there are some stories to go with that title. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Great Shot Harv. I do not think I would give it a try at my age. Unless someone offered me a ride on their bike. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
