I thought that the dealer was padding the time on winch installs when they billed them at 2.5 hrs. They weren't lying, I just put the Kubota Winch kit on my RTV 500 and it took 2 hrs 13 min:ashamed: I figured I would have that puppy on there in 1/2 an hour, I was mistaked:laughing:

Now I just need to go find some mud to bury this little bugger so I can try out the winch:D

I bought a Warn winch kitted for a Polaris ATV. Directions said 30 minutes to install. It took me three hours.

If that time includes all winch control placements and wiring, that's fast. It took me 2hrs and 13 min to just gear up to install a Warn RT40 on my Kawasaki 3010 Trans Mule diesel.

The Warn winch kit is pretty good. Plug and play. What took the most time was routing and tucking the wiring so it wouldn't get chafed.

Don't forget to unspool and respool the cable under tension prior to using it to get you unstuck. There is no faster way to destroy a new cable then using the winch when the cabe is loosely wrapped (that's how it comes from teh factory).

I usually use a tree (tree strap required), apply hand brake so there is a slight drag and winch the RTV to the tree. Mind the cable wraps. You may have to guide the cable so it does not overlay the previous wrap. It's an art so no worries you have to reverse and wind more then once.

While you have it fully unwound, suggest spray painting (bright color - orange or red) the last 5' of cable at the drum. This provides a nice visual when you are nearing the last couple of cable wraps. You always want a couple of wraps on the drum prior to winching.

1st & last rule of winching - SAFETY. You'll live longer w/all your body parts.....

Ok - that's my 2 cents on winch use and safety. Enjoy it........

That was the total time, the kit was very well engineered for the Kubota so it was fairly simple it just took longer than I expected.

If you can do it for the first time in 2.5 hours, an experienced mechanic can do it in about half that time.

My original steel cable only lasted a year. Frayed and broke mostly from raising and lowering a snow blade. I went to Amsteel Blue synthetic winch rope. Stronger than steel and wears much better. The Amsteel Blue has lasted three years with no sign of wearing. And it's a lot easier to handle than aircraft cable.

when useing a winch always free spool the cable out. reason being is your heating up that motor running the motor to do something you could do by hand. this way when you start to winch in the motor is nice and cool and remember to winch in a bit then stop and check cable then winch in some more never just hold the button down and keep the winch pulling it will only brunup your motor.
