So I'm going to close on the Farm--100 acres with 25 of them cleared for pasture. I would like to clear some of the woods...

So I need a tractor -- but geez!

You would think i'm getting gold plated stuff here...but this is what i'm quoted:

JD 5105M $55188.95
FEL 563 farm loader 6500.00
PHD with 9" auger 2700.00
Box Blade Long Grapple Bucket 78"-->$3000.00
PC1072 Field Cultivator-->$743.00
709 Rotary Cutter --->$5378.81

73,509 plus tax.........

I think I should price out the KIOTI?

HELP!

I don't know what the tractor should sell for. You can find out though, by going on the JD website and building it up and getting a price, then subtract 15%, usually the best deal you can get at a dealer. 15% off retail is what I offer them, and get it at one dealer or the other.

The post hole drill is WAY overpriced. I bought one at tractor supply, admittadly a cheap one (Speeco), and including the auger I have less than $500 in it.

The loader price is probably about right, guessing a little.

I don't know what a "Box blade long grapple bucket" is.

At least, buy the pallet fork attachment for your loader. With that, even without a fancy grapple, you can handle huge piles of brush or a couple logs at a time. WAY more productive than a bucket, even a 4-way bucket, for woods work.

For rotary cutter, price a Woods or something. There's NO WAY it should cost 5 grand.

These prices were in U.S. dollars, right?

I'm no expert but I think someone is quoting you list prices. Call 'em back and tell them to get real.

Are you getting a HD loader bucket and then a grapple attached to that? Or are you getting a 4 in 1 bucket?

don't be afraid of the used markets, i've seen some decent deals lately.......tractors still seem to hold their value, even in this bad economy....

also, don't be afraid to price out the other big names; new holland, kubota, kioti, etc., etc.

used attachments seem to sell for about 1/2-3/4 initial cost....depending on how well they have been kept.......

shop around on the internet; criagslist, used tractor sites, ebay, etc..

Firstly, yes those are US Dollars.

It probably is list prices -- near as I can tell. I bought a 534 mower with bagger there about a year ago for 8,500.00

I bought a Gator last week -- 17,000 and change...

I think I have sucker written on my forehead.

I think I will go and price out the other makers. I also read that if one is going to be going in the woods a lot, to NOT get a cab. About 60% of my property is wooded--so i'm considering not getting one.

I am getting the standard loader with HD bucket, and an additional Grapple bucket--sort of like tongs on the top and the bottom.

Hey, thanks you guys for all the helpful advice!!!!!!!!!

Tractor...Around here used and new are pretty much the same price...Seriously speaking any used machine ready to work is gonna be just a hair lower then a new one. Add in the factor of the possiblity and not getting exactly what you want (tires, loader, etc..) and its pointless to shop used. Shop the other colors, and dont be color blind, I love my green machine, but I also love the dealer...Dealer support should be the single biggest factor in your purchase decision....

Attachments, I fully agree....if your not in a hurry you can shop around and find good deals.

Ultimately your market area will make a big difference on what brand, new vs used, etc...

Totally agree with everything Dave said. One of the reasons I chose green was the local dealers. Kabota was my next choice as there is a good local Kabota dealer as well (my boss uses them a lot for his personal tractors). Now, we have a neighbor that has a Kioti, and while he obviously saved a bit over what I paid for my Deere, the support for it is awful. While he hasn't really had too many problems that I know of, it was just way too much of a gamble for me to look at them. Same reason I didn't look at New Holland as there are no local dealers anywhere close to me.

Maybe. But that doesn't mean someone HAS to take advantage of you. A gator at 17k sounds outrageous.

I thought the same thing, then I went on the configurator and priced out a loaded 850d...it shocked me:eek:

I did get every possible option on the Gator -- and I gotta tell you, (it was delivered today) it is one sweet machine. I am extemly impressed with the way it looks (Limited Edition cami model) and it performs better than I anticipated.

With respect ot the other comments regarding the dealer: perhaps the reason I didn't even flinch at the price is because the dealer is fantastic. They really do treat me well, and the particular fellow that is helping me is a third generation farmer and he really knows his stuff. They are in a "high rent" area and I have no problem with them making a good profit; I just don't relish the thought of feeling like I over paid.

I'm thinking of looking at the previous or outgoing models e.g. 5425 and seeing if he can make me a better deal. I mean, it's not that big a farm and do I really need 105 HP?

Last: again beacuse of the heavily wooded areas, should seriously think of NOT getting a cab? Anyone have experience with that?

Thank you all so very much -- i check this forum now about five times a day!
