John Deere 2320 and a 1025R
We have two properties and one JD 2320 tractor. We want to remove our t-posts and put in wood posts for a electric fence. One property has sloped ground in places with hard pack and rock. The other has nice clayish soil no rocks, gentle slope. I want to get a PHD that will last, do the job and hopefully not cost a fortune. Estimating 120 posts to start, 100's too go over time.

Suggestions please

Leave the t-posts. Put the wire on them. :)

I had my 4 year old partner put to rest because of the t-posts he was the best horse ever. T-posts are going we've had horses injured on them over the years and nave all paddocks now in Noble Panels and the pastures will be wood posts.

To start with, those 3 things simply do not go together. I suppose that is up for debate, just not with me. Get a PHD that is low geared, so that leaves out any economy unit. Get one that you can put a down force kit on, that also leaves out anything economy. Get an auger that has good teeth, Pengo come to mind. But there are certain types of teeth for certain types of ground, you need to get what will work best for your conditions. Get a hydraulic side link for your 3pt hitch so that it is easy to plum up your auger to drill plumb holes. None of these things add up to anything economical .

Consider renting a Bobcat with a hydraulic unit. I can't hardly believe that I just typed that, but for cost reasons, that may be the way to go. All that other stuff ends up costing big money, I know first hand. ;)

Start pricing these things out and the Bobcat starts looking better, and I HATE to rent equipment. But if you can afford it, sometimes just the convenience of having everything yourself and doing it whenever you have time can be well worth the money.

Good luck

What you need is a Danuser model F8. But the problem is, it is not cheap and you don't have enough tractor.

I think all Phd's will cost a fortune, take allot of time, and in the end really aren't what you expected. In your case...if I had to pick, I think a Phd in PhyEd will give you the best results. :cool2:

There are two types of post hole diggers. The good ones are hydraulic. They cost a lot more, but they have reverse and you can mount them to your front end loader, or even better, to a backhoe or excavator if you have one. They 3 point only go in one direction, so if you get it stuck, you have to use a really big pipe wrench to get it out, or a backhoe to pull it out. I've done both, the backhoe option is faster, but your get a holes twice as big as you wanted.

Then there are the cutting teeth. The good ones are replaceable and made of carbide or some other hardened steel. The cheap ones have metal cutting edges or come with replaceable metal teeth.

In my opinion, all of the 3 point models are about equal as far as gearboxes go. I have a low budget Lienbach Line and it's gear box is indestructible. No reason to spend more money there. What you need to spend the money on is the teeth. I've found the best deal is at Tractor Supply with their Country Line models. You don't need any down preassure because it just digs through the very hardest clay possible, during the driest months of August. The only drawback to it is it digs too fast and if you lose control of how fast it's digging, you will bury it and need to either wrench it out, or get a backhoe to pull it out. I've busted pretty big pipe wrenches with even bigger cheater bars on them unwinding an auger out of the ground.

If you are digging in rock, then hydraulic is the only option, and you need special teeth for that.

Is a post pounder an option? Again not inexpensive but eliminates tamping the posts. I believe Danuser makes a unit that may attach to the FEL on your tractor.

Didn't know you had horses. There are lots of t-post safety caps available, which may let you do the work over a longer period of time with less danger to the horses.

Thank you everyone. You've given me options and things to think about. A local company wants $1550. a day to put in 60 posts that I still have to buy, out of our price range. I think we will go with a rental for the current property that is hard and rock. I now have some brands to look at and maybe find used. I appreciate your help.
