Johnbud - looks like you might be around the kettle morraine area, especially given the grounds ability to soak up water that way.

Last 2 days. I'm starting to think that the plug at the bottom must be out!
In the bottom picture you can see the white ice. That is how much liquid water dropped over night. Hard to see from this picture, but it is about 2 or 3" from looking at other areas. i suppose that a sand, sandstone and shale sided hole in the ground isn't water tight....who knew?
