Hi all. I was surprised to see that in the implement limitation chart (L3901 owners manual) the highest max load for a three point implement is 770 lbs. I was hoping to be able to carry almost twice this weight on my 3pt hitch? Did tractor data steer me wrong in saying the L3901 can lift 1985 lbs at the hitch? What gives?

1985# (at the pins) is correct. It falls to 1433# 24" back from the pins.

right....so why does the owners manual list a handful of 3pt attachments not to exceed 770 lbs? I can't believe I'm the first one to scratch my head about this?

I'm looking at the manual right now and yes, you are correct. My guess is the weight limitations are for shock load, as in hitting a bump and the implement 'bounces'.

What were you planning to hook up to the 3 point?

On day I had planned on buying a turf seeder / roller combo (Brillion). These are popular in the food plotting communities... Basicaly its a light tooth tiller, cultipacker, seeder rolled into one. These can easily tip 1200 lbs....

Depends on what size seeder you get but I can tell you what happens if you get to big of a seeder (Brillion). Be parpared for broken castings and I will bet the warrenty will not cover it. I know where there is one at a landscape place that has had 3 castings replaced as they cracked from the weight. The warenty covered the first 2 and the third was on the owner. He ended up buying a bigger tractor

The bare tractor weight of an L3901 is 2,700 pounds. Personally, from hard experience, I would not mount a 1,200 pound implement on a tractor this light with the object of operating over ROUGH GROUND. The "g-force" as you bounce will spike considerably above 1,200 pounds.

Split up the load among two or three separate implements.

You might just be the first one to read that section of the owner's manual :D My guess is because of lawyers and safety margins they play it safe. I've picked up water tanks with 1600 pounds. Maxed out my lift... but the weight was not too far back.

I have a very old turf seeder / double roller combo (Brillion), my tractor doesn't even know it back there. It's tucked up pretty close. My counter weight is 800 lbs but no more than 12" past the pins.

I would not test out the max lift without a FEL on... it's 3500 lbs at that point.

PS. I think most of what they recommend is on the conservative size in terms of implement width (and weight). Kind of like when they set the PSI setting on the tractor, it's always on the lower end of the scale.

A lot has to do with the weight of the implements and their size. The wheel on a six foot rotary cutter will be close to ten feet behind the tractor and a good bounce will lift the front end and keep the tractor wanting to swing in a fast turn. A light duty six foot cutter weighs in at around 750lbs. Now imagine if someone tried to use a six foot heavy duty rotary cutter at 1100lbs what that would do. Yet a 1200lb seed spreader would have a negligible affect. Since a lot of people do not consider the size and length and will go back and either insist on warranty coverage, or worse yet file a lawsuit in the event of injury, the manufacturer is probably going to use the largest size implement to set the implement weight limit.
