Mowing Inherited 05 5103

A friend has inherited a 2005 5103 from his uncle’s estate. The tractor has about 400hrs on it. He is a high school teacher, lives on 12 acres, mostly open, but funds are limited. The tractor has had regular greasing, oil changes every year as well as fuel filter, hydraulic oil filter and air filter replacement. The coolant, hoses, belt and hydraulic oil have not been changed. The tractor was kept out of the weather. Being funds are limited, he cannot afford to do these services and is not real mechanical-I offered to do it free, he has to save up for parts. He is fearful of mechanical failure if he doesn’t perform the above mentioned items soon. Hour wise, he is good. Time wise, not so much. I own the same tractor and do my coolant and hyd fluid every 2-3 years, oil/filters yearly. I only have about 520 hours on mine. What is your take on what he should do? The hoses/belts appear fine and I will test coolant. The tractor will be used for bush hogging and runs great. Thoughts?

I’d change the engine oil and that’s pretty cheap to do. Was the hydraulic oil changed before? If it was done at the first 50 hours it’s probably rated for 1000 hours. What does the manual say.

I’d change the engine oil and that’s pretty cheap to do. Was the hydraulic oil changed before? If it was done at the first 50 hours it’s probably rated for 1000 hours. What does the manual say.

The oil was just changed about 2 months ago. The hyd fluid is very clean, basically clear.

I'd change the coolant, and see what the belt and HYD fluid looks like before I just change it.

I'd let that go then. If the belt looks solid and not cracks I'd let that go too.

I would clean the radiator front and back. Sounds like a great tractor!

It is. Was very well kept. Never saw rain, kept in a barn on a concrete floor. I have the same tractor and have enjoyed it.

Then the maintenance required shouldn’t be much. I’d leave the hydraulic oil and radiator hoses alone. If the fan belt looks good which it probably does I’d leave it alone. If the loader hydraulic lines look good which they probably do being garage kept I’d leave them alone. Unless you know when the the engine oil was changed I’d change it. If you do know when it was changed I’d run it until the interval.

All the fluids and hoses/belts appear to be good. I am picking up a coolant test kit in the morning.
