We've had hughesnet for about 3 1/2 years and I'm pretty happy. We got in on it when there was no equipment to buy/lease, no install cost, and no contract. Prior to that, we had dial-up and we had tried an AT&T wireless card, but reception was very poor at our house.
We have the cheapest plan, and by the time you add the cost of the plan, taxes/surcharges, and a $5 "service plan", we're paying about $47-$48 per month. In recent times, they have changed how they alot your download allowance, so I think it is now calculated on a rolling 48 hour average instead of 24 hours, so that helps if you don't use it much one day but do the next. We lose ours whenever we lose TV (Dish), but that's just part of it. Right now, I don't think there is a better option in our area.
Cons are that, in our plan, there is not enough usage allowable to stream movies or TV shows, unless you do it between midnight and 6AM (or maybe 7AM, I'm not sure) when usage is unlimited. I have a tool on our desktop tray that looks like a fuel gauge and shows how much usage you have remaining for the day, and they also "give" you a refresh token each month that you can use if you use up all our allotted internet usage.
My mom has unlimited data DSL - there's no comparison. I would jump to DSL or cable in a heartbeat, but it's just not offered in our area. I doubt we will ever get either, I'm just hoping sooner or later somebody will offer an effective wireless system.
Good luck and take care.
