I live on 3/4 of an acre and am planning on buying a used bx22 to help with projects and maintenance. My question is whether I should get one with a mower? I have 10,000 square feet of lawn to mow and wanted to know if this size tractor is overkill for this size lawn or ok? Thanks for your help!

you do know it comes with a backhoe and front loader right? the BX is perefect for mowing and other tasks. they have different sizes of mid mount mowers from 48 inch to 60 inch.

Definitely not overkill. I have less than half an acre which my house and two driveways sit on and I have a BX25 with a 54" deck. If you can justify the use and your pockets are deep enough I support the purchase.

What are
projects and maintenance
?

What do you expect to pay for the BX22?

I've a 14,000 sq ft lot and have been mowing about 10,000 sq ft of lawn for 30 yrs w/ a 5hp walk behind lawnmower. It takes roughly two hours.

My B7610 was bought to move down to retirement in Mississippi, where Ive got about 400 acres . I can't quickly imagine the case where I would want a $10,000 tractor for a 30,000 sq ft lot.

Don't get me wrong, it's been fun digging a few stumps, plowing a little snow, grading a little dirt, but it's not been $10,000 worth of fun. $10,000 would buy 5 more acres in Mississippi, and that would be more fun.

If your main purpose is to cut the yard, go with a Z turn mower. Much, much faster.

Years ago I had a B1750 (23 HP) with 54" deck, could do my lawn in 20 minutes, sold that and to this day use a 21" Honda mower and takes me 1 Hour, SOON I will be getting a B2920 with a 60" deck and I finally can get the mowing done in maybe 15 minutes, not having to rush home after work take care of the dogs and mow for an hour, that is if its not raining or too dark. Also have 4 acres of woods and probably more landscape areas than grass that need bark refreshed every year or so, then there's my mother-in-laws house with 4 acres that will become mine to take care of soon. GET THE MOWER!

Thats not that much mowing, so yes, it sounds like overkill. I mow roughly 2 acres and its pretty hilly, so the BX made sense for me. I hate recomending cheaper big box store riding mowers, but you can buy one for less than the price of the 60" deck for a BX. If on the other hand, you have the money, I'd say go for it. If you have a lot of things to use the end loader and backhoe for, its money well spent.

....I live on 3/4 of an acre .... 10,000 square feet of lawn to mow ....

With this size of space , it's more a case of can you get to all the
corners and edges with a BX MMM unit . I still have to walk behind a
JD 21" for half an hour because of BX size . Buy a BX as a digger , if
that's what you want , but consider 900s.metres rather small . That's only
4 strips of my left hand front yard .........

Of course a guy can have any toy his pocketbook can support, but nonetheless, yes, it's overkill. Take your house, driveway, garage, flowerbeds, etc, out of that 3/4 acre and you've less than 1/2 acre of lawn, most likely. Also agree that getting close is far more important than anything else as a time saver, otherwise, you still face a lot of trimming.

A bit too much to push? Perhaps. Depends on how fast your grass grows and your local climate. I'd have the best riding lawn tractor I could afford, JD X340 or better would be my choice. I'd also look at a small zero turn.

I have a lot more acres (fields) but only about 1/2 acre of lawn and my BX 1850 with a 54" MMM is probably overkill. I used to buy big box store riding mowers for the lawns but they always self-destructed within 4 or 5 years or so. If nothing else, a BX will last a long time even if it is overkill for lawns.
