Massey Ferguson GC1705
Good morning,

I am having an issue with starting my MFGC1705. Initially I thought it was just that battery because I was getting nothing at all when turning the key. I disconnected the battery and charged it but still am unable to start the tractor. When I turn the key to on the dash light for the battery and oil pressure go on and I get a clicking sound. However, as soon as I turn the key to engage the glow plugs I get absolutely nothing. The dash lights completely go out and there is no more clicking. Turning to start the tractor does nothing either. Trying to engage the glow plugs or ignition also seems to be draining the battery because after some time the dash lights will not even come on with the key in the first position. I am at a loss as to what may be causing this so any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Ken

I would start by having a fully charged battery (new or old) load tested. During the process I'd also clean the battery terminals thoroughly as well as the cable ends. Tighten securely. Follow the battery ground lead to the frame. Clean and tighten the connection there as well. Inspect the connectors themselves for corrosion or looseness. This procedure could solve your problem. If not at least you have a good starting point.

How old is the battery?

I agree with Roadworthy! Check the battery under a load. Any place that sells batteries should be able to do this as well as most mechanical repair shops.

Clean and tighten all connection points of both battery cables and tighten securely. Don’t forget the ignition switch wire also.

I have seen brand new batteries fail under load testing, so age of battery really does not matter in the status of the battery.

Put volt meter across battery and roll key over to start, if battery voltage drops below 10 volts its a bad battery.... IF battery voltage does not drop, then its probably ignition switch or start relay...

Thank you for the responses. I will test the battery and check/clean all the connections. The battery is only about 8 months old.

In in these days just because battery is only 8 month old does not mean its still good.... The quality we grew up with is just not there any more...

Is it really cold where you are? In some other threads, people have found that the seat safety switch is not closing in the cold. That could cause a no crank condition. Not sure if it shuts down the glow plugs tho..

It has been quite cold here in New Hampshire but like you said, I am also not sure the seat switch would shut off the glow plugs or not.

BE VERY CAREFUL BATTERY COULD BE FROZEN.

Frozen battery can become grenade in jump starting situation.

Safest to do is substitute known good battery and start tractor. Can be done wid jumper cables as long as bad battery is disconnected.
