As LBrown said, probably out of balance.

I broke a spindle housing this spring. It really surprised me because I just brushed the stump. It sure looked low enough for the mower to clear. I just got the new housing last week. $58:eek:

My wife has a nickname "Stump Killer". She has hit stumps so hard the mandrell shattered on our riding mower on one side. So I fixed it and marked all the stumps. She did it again about 2 weeks later, this time popping a spot weld loose on the mower deck as well as twisting the blade like a pretzel. We moved from that property to our new one about a year ago--no stumps! She complains the trees at the new place aren't as mature--but I point out the riding mower is still alive and well!

I think you know WHY you did it.
a) Too lazy to do a bit more with the trimmer ?
b) Pride that you (thought you) could get that close and NOT hit it.
Either way, folk often decide that "stuff like this happens", it is "inevitable", it is "an accident", etc.
but it IS avoidable.

I have 2 flat rocks that get mowed over, they stick up just enough to catch the blade....I usually just lift the mower a hair and I'm good but everytime I forget to lift the deck and I hear that grind, I swear I'll take a sledge to them....one of these days:rolleyes:

I have rough, rocky, treed land and invariably screw something up every time I mow.

- Break a ROPS knob
- Bend a fender
- Wallop a fence post
- Scar a tree
- Crack a water shut-off cover
- Explode a plumbing clean-out
- Lose a scalp roller nut
- Hit a thousand rocks...

Not to mention the operator constantly getting clobbered by tree limbs.

It's true when in doubt steer clear and come back with a trimmer. But something still gets tatered every time I mow. Once I resigned myself to that, it became a pleasant experience, albeit a war of attrition.

My (BX) deck seems to be the most robust part of this equation. I just flip it on end in winter and fix what appears to need fixin. My blades always look like **** at the end of the season. Spindles and gearbox have held up great (so far).

I've hit rocks with my 72mmm. Hasn't been an issue - I think the belts act as a slip clutch. Didn't help the blades much granted, and took a lot of grinding to get them balanced again. As others said, I bet your blade(s) are out of balance.
