Tractor
Kubota L3901 & LA525
I have 8 acres that I need to rough cut. I've been looking at the 2210 but just noticed the 790 on the JD web site. I know the 2210 is small but the price is sure right. I think I can get the 2210, FEL, 5' brush hog, and a rear blade for about 12k. It looks like the 4wd 790 is more but it looks like a bigger tractor.

I need to rough cut the 8 acres and do some light FEL work. It seems like the 2210 fits the bill but really want to be sure

anyone have comments on these two tractors?

First, it depends if you want hydrostatic transmission or gear. The 790 is only available as a gear tractor.

That said, the 790 would probably be a better fit for the 8 acres. If you're insistent on a hydro, you should look at the 4115 or 4200 series machines.

Frankly, the 2210 probably isn't big enough...

I own a JD 2210 and feel that it would be too small for your size property. I would go for the 790 if you do not mind the gear transmission. Just my opinion.

as an owner of a 2210 I would agree with those who say that the 2210 may be a bit too small for 8 acres. It's about right for my 3.5 acres. The FEL can lift a lot more than its rated 620lbs but it needs lots of weight in back.

I have a 2210 and for my 5 acres it's great. I mostly use it for mowing with occassional FEL work. Basically my FEL is a real nice wheelbarrow. My next door neighbor has a 790. He uses his 790 for everything but mowing. He works it hard. It's a real worker. I don't envy all of the gear work when he's using the FEL but he likes it. It's a no-frills tractor that gets the job done.

I can see myself moving up to a 4x10 tractor in a few years after I find more things to do with one.

Hi

I also have a 2210 which has done everything I need to maintain about 3 acres. I'm not sure about a 5 foot brush hog on it, most use a 4 foot which it handles fine. I think last time I was at the JD dealer he had some charts on the wall giving aproximate times for cutting an acre with different size cutters. I think my deciding factor would be how long would it take to cut 8 acres with a 4 foot cutter, then you would know if you want to get that much seat time or need something bigger. I agree with another poster about the loader lifting more then the 620 pounds, I was moving bags of cement and had about 900 pounds in it and it lifted it fine.

thanks everyone. I had been only looking at the jd 2210 and the massey 2300 but think I need to at least check the pricing on the larger models. I also think I should check out the Kubota line too.

I'd guess that the jd 4115 is going to be about 4k more than the 2210 and that may be a deal breaker. I bought the land to plant apple trees, grape vines, and the like - my wife wants to build a house. I have to be very mindful of the money /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'll check on the prices but I'm inclined to get the 2210 and use it for a few years and then trade up if need be. At least then I'll know my needs more exactly.

The 4110 is a midway machine. The 4115 is quite a leap from the 2210.

so, what is the next step up from the 2210? It's really confusing. The 2210 has 17.7 hp pto and the 4010 only has 14 hp pto. So it would seem the 2210 is more powerful even though it's smaller. To my eyes, the next step up from the 2210 is the 4115 which has 19 hp pto...

I really do want to avoid shifting so I've also eliminated the 7900.

Why can't buying a tractor be like buying a Honda car. They all come in three flavors: dx, lx, ex. It sure would be easier /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

"I have to be very mindful of the money "

Then it's time to look used...

I bought my 790 for $12500.

You can find 770's, 855's and other Deere models for well within your budget...but you'll have to do without that back hoe for a bit. Even late 90's 4200's and 4300's can be had for less then $15K...I know, I looked at a nice '99 4300 synchro-shift tractor in Virginia for just over $14K (too big for my needs, but it was nice!).
The 770 4WD tractor (early '90's) should be between $8K and 10K, the 855 a bit more. Also, there are the 750's, 755's. These are all 4WD machines (not all have 4WD, but it was available on all of them).

Then, there are the the larger machines...870, 955, 970...and these are just the Deere models. There are Kubota 2150's and all the Ford/New Holland machines as well.

And although I don't recomend them unless you can turn a wrench..the Kioti's, Yanmar's and (definitely NOT recomended!!) grey market machines.

You do have many options...just got to determine your immediate needs (that is, you can rent a back hoe).
