JD 2320
The front u-joint on my 2320 main drive shaft is failing, and needs replaced. Has anyone done this before or can give helpful hints on how to dissemble and replace the u-joint? I can see it with a flashlight from below, but nor enough room to reach it through the opening, let alone get tools in there.

Thanks
Jim

Welcome to TBN.

I haven't done it, but surely someone will be along that knows the procedure.

I think a lot of us 2320 owners are fearfully curious about this. How many hours does your 2320 have and were the U joints regularly greased?

The tractor is a 2007 with 265 hours on it that I bought new. I always follow all the recommended maintenance in the owner's manual, but the zerk fittings on the main driveshaft are not pictured or mentioned in the manual, so the u-joint closest to the engine had never been greased, I did not know it was there to grease it. The u-joint at the transmission side I had been greasing, since I saw it when I was under the tractor. It had started making a rattling noise like something was loose when first starting to move, so that is what started me looking. With a flashlight, I managed to see the u-joint in question, and determined that is what was making the noise. Once I figured out how to access it, thanks to this forum, I determined that the u-joint was definitely the problem. I was unsure how to disassemble the drive shaft assembly without a shop maual, so contacted my dealer this morning. They told me their manual says the entire shaft needs replaced, cannot just replace the bad u-joint, although it looks to me like it could be disassembled. They are going to pick it up this week to get a better look in the shop of what the repair may entail, and let me know. I would try this myself, but not knowing exactly what is required to get it apart and back together, decided to let them look at it. They did tell me that the driveshaft itself is about a $636 dollar part. I also told them that since the manual never mentions this u-joint as needing grease, I thought JD should help some on an obvious design flaw since this is so hard to reach without taking the console apart to find an access panel. the dealer said he would present it to the regional manger, but with it being several years out of warranty and with the hours it had on it not to get my hopes up. This is the first problem I have had with the tractor since I bought it, and have really enjoyed it. We mow about 2 acres, use the bucket some, and have a PTO Trac Vac to pick up leaves in the fall.

Jim,

Mine failed about 2 years ago (~330hrs), the hole front yoke grenaded. Luckily it didn't break anything else on the tractor. If you do some searching on here you can find a Tech Alert (Or whatever they call them.) that states they forgot to put this U Joint in the manual as a grease point. I took this Alert and talked to my dealer, and told them they didn't even mail me a notification about this (I bought the tractor new.). So, in my view they had a lot of responsibility for the failure. JD without much effort gave me the part at no cost to me. Install is pretty easy if you want to do it yourself, if not its only about 2-3hrs shop time.

If for some reason you cant get JD to step up to the plate, I would go to a driveline shop and have them repair or make a new shaft. Then you could have them put sealed bearings in the front Joint, and you wouldn't have to worry about it again.

I've always understood that a sealed U-joint will last longer than a greasable U-joint that you don't grease, but a greasable one will far outlast a sealed joint if you maintain it.

I agree with the previous post about taking the driveshaft to a drive line speciality shop or a well equipped machine shop. Guarantee they can repair it for less than $650. I sincerely wish you luck with JD. You've got a really low hour tractor for a 2007 in my opinion. Let us know how you make with the fix and whether or not JD helps you out.
I don't think they are obliged but it really makes me glad that I bought JD when the do step up to the plate and help out on issues like this.

True, but I bet that +50% of the 2320's don't get maintained properly.
