JD 2320
New 2320 being delivered tomorrow and I'd like to get a 3ph log splitter in the next few weeks. Does anyone have experience with the Northern Tool 3ph Splitter powered by the tractor's hydraulics? Specs for the splitter say a maximum of 11 gpm flow and 2500 psi. The JD 2320 flow rate is about half of that divided between pwr steering and implement; implement is 3.4 gpm and steering is 2.2 gpm. Is this splitter too much for the 2320? Or ... will it work, but be painfully slow?

It will be slower, but ask Kenny for a good run-down on performance. I was wondering myself if there might be a way to augment the hydraulic flow rate, and was going to ask Kenny if a PTO pump could be plumbed into the system to increase the flow.
I just purchased a Speeco 3pt log-splitter from TSC, and choose it because it can be operated both vertically and horizontally.

Welcome to TBN:D

It will be slow, no doubt about it, probably to slow to be very useful. I personally wouldn't use a 3PH splitter on a machine with less than 5GPM minimum.

Not really, and with a PTO pump costing about $400, plus the extra plumbing/filter/tank, it's just more cost effective to get a stand-alone splitter.

Is it hooked up yet? You are just at 5GPM, and my tractor is rated at 5.1GPM, so I am curious what the cycle times are at different RPM's so I have a baseline...

Not yet, it's supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I think I'll be okay using it with the 2520's 10+gpm. I'll probably post some pics when it's hooked up and let you know how it goes!

You will only have 5GPM to operate the splitter, NOT 10+GPM, read the specs again...Sorry to burst your bubble;)

Okay, now I'm nervous...hope this turns out okay, can't afford a mistake at the moment.

I'm using a Ramsplitter made specificaly for CUTs. It has a smaller diam cylinder and shorter stroke to help with lower GPMs of some CUTs. I use it to split 4 ~ 5 chords of hardwood per year. Its works fine 99% of what I put through it. A few nasty crotches have halted the splitter but wedge and maul will fix those in a hurry.

IMHO this is a good splitter for the average Home owner buring some firewood and trying to save a few bucks. If your using a log splitter to make a living, go with a stand-alone unit.

Here is a link to what I purchased.

Ramsplitter Log Splitter Model 3PT Attachment, the Toughest Log Splitter on the Market

Here is a link to how I modified mine for QH compatiblity.

Good luck and let us know what you get.

I like the Split Fire 230 I bought. Save times since the blades moves back and forth so you can split in both directions.

I originally had a Wallenstein and sold it when I sold my original CUT.

I calculated the volume of the ram cylinder, and the corresponding rate of fill, and came up with a cycle time of aprox 15 secs each way. Time will tell.

Here is your solution. 7 sec cycle time and the tractor never ever feels the load. I really think it burns less than a 5 hp Briggs. I run it at 1700RPM but no load is on the engine.
