Jd 3720 cold weather starting question

I have 2 conditions I would like feed back on.
When I start the tractor for the first time on a chilly day it starts at a high idle (approx 1100) with the throttle lever all the way down. It will stay this way for about thirty seconds and then go all the way down to normal.

Second, when this condition is happening, the engine sounds a little louder.

May have done it before but just now noticing. I can tell you it never did this during the summer though.I don't use the preheater becuase the temps I'm talking about are in the 40's and starts on the first turn. however, I did use the preheated yesterday for about 10 seconds and the Motor didn't do what I'm explaining.
Anyone else notice this with their 3x20 machine? Probably normal but thought I would hear you guys thoughts. It's a 2012 machine with about 100 hrs

that is the "cold starting device" that changes the pump timing on really cold starts for environmental purposes. it is perfectly normal...........bud

Yep, the colder it is outside the more smoke and sputtering there is. It's all normal. Let your machine get warm before you put it under stress.

I make it a habit to not move the tractor until it idles down and better yet if I have time I wait for the temp gauge to come off the peg. I also keep the RPM in the low teens or idle until it gets some decent heat in it.

I never advance the throttle for cold starts on my 3720. Depending upon how cold it is, I give it anywhere between 10 and 20 seconds pre-heat before cranking. Starts first time, every time - and goes directly to fast idle all by itself. The duration of the fast idle is determined by the ambient temperature; the colder the engine, the longer the fast idle. I do not however, bother to wait till the fast idle reverts. In the old days we had to wait till the gear oil and hydraulic fluid thinned out a bit. But with this Low-Vis HyGard, there's no waiting. As long as there's oil pressure, I git up and go. That said, it's never been below zero here since I bought the tractor. The coldest starts are typically in the teens.

Now cold-starting my Porsche.......that's another story altogether.

I run Swiss miss hot chocolate in my Bentley radiator in the winter. :laughing:

I do always get a Diesel engine warm before treating like a dog. A diesel is reliant on warmth for power.

Chin - I have a 4105 with 50 hours, very similar set up. It does the exact same thing. I noticed it the last two starts and was also perplexed. Glad you asked and I also thank you all for the responses.

I converted my Lamborghini to run on used fry oil. That also is a chore to cold start. I am going to try and hook up an old fry-o-lator and see if that helps. Getting warmer here but I hope to have it ready by next winter. :cool2:

Yea these tractors are set up with a high idle in cold weather just like your old carb equiped cars with automatic chokes. They would high idle until warm. I used the glow plugs starting my 3520 with any temps below freezing. I started it in 10 below zero several times and I heated the plugs for a minute or so and hit it. started right up and high idled a long time. I just went and did other things until it idled back down.

That is the way they are built.
