Hello,

Don't post much, but thought I'd ask a question about a noise I noticed last night. It's entirely possible this always happens and this is the first time I've heard it....but not sure. Anyway, after brush hogging for an hour or so I let the tractor cool down for a few minutes while I cleaned it off. Once I parked it and shut it down I heard a sound like fluid draining. It seemed to be coming from the transmission and didn't last more than a minute, but I thought it was odd. There was no unusual behavior beforehand so I'm curious if this might just be normal. Thoughts anyone? The tractor has a hydro trans.

So is this just the hydraulic fluid draining back into the reservoir?

Thanks,
Chris

yesterday i fired it up for just a few minutes and upon shutdown no noise. so is it possible that when the trans is hot something allows the hydro fluid relief into the reservoir? what might happen if i had an implement up off the ground and I shut it down? I know in doing that in the past the implement would stay elevated...but without having tested this further....i'm curious if i might have an issue. can anyone offer an insight? i would appreciate it.

It sounds like fluid returning to the sump to me. I haven't noticed the sound, but will hang around a bit next time for a listen.

Ok so I think I figured out what the sound is...but what's bugging me is that i never noticed it before....after 400 hours. Anyway, I believe that brown40 is correct...it's the fluid returning to the sump. I didn't notice it the time I mentioned above because I didn't cycle the loader or run the PTO. But yesterday I did an hour of finish mowing and once I shut it down I heard the noise. Once I park it and shut it down I take pressure off the loader by moving the joystick, and so, :duh: , that fluid must be returning to the sump. Next time I'll leave the pressure on the loader and see if I hear it.....if not...then release it and see. Sorry for the stupid questions.

Thats definitely fluid returning to sump. You might not hear it if the engine/transmission are not warm enough. You could have the same noise coming from the engine when oil drains back down from the head. If you lower your loader or implement after you shut down the engine you could possibly hear oil returning to the sump. What makes me wonder why it would sound like a 'waterfall'? Check for propper oil level and if works as it should there is nothing to worry about.
