Backhoe JD500C electrical problems

Hi, Anybody familiar w/the starting circuits on these beasts? My machine was running fine when the alternator started chirping. I replaced the alternator but it just clicked. I had a guy look at it and he said the starter relay had also gone bad but I could run it by jumping the contacts. Did this once or twice, then it wouldn't start again. I replaced the relay and fixed a ring terminal on the safety switch. It's back to clicking and won't start w/the key or jumping. I've recharged the battery and cleaned the contacts; the key switch and starter are new in the last few years... Any advice would be appreciated. Thx. DA

Do you have access to a voltmeter? If so, check for voltage at the small terminal on the starter when you attempt to crank. If no voltage there, check for voltage at small terminal on starter relay when trying to crank. If voltge is 10 volts or less at both spots, you either have bad battery or bad connection at battery, frame ground, or starter. If any of the battery cables have repair ends (clamp-on ends) be sure to remove the ends from the cables and clean those connections also. I voltage is good all the way to the starter, then you have a bad starter.

Thx for the tips. I have a voltmeter (not good with it) and will try those steps over the weekend. I'm still thinking there is another wiring issue though. Usually, when I turn the key, the 3 indicator lights come on (altenator, oil pressure, air sensor) but now the air sensor doesn't light. I know the bulb works because it comes on when I push the start button; the other 2 shut off. I'm thinking a fuse or the neutral safety switch has also gone bad....

It's possible this RE38391 STARTER RELAY is bad or not getting a good ground. It should mounted on firewall above the starter motor.
