JD790/419 Loader drifting down

We have a JD 790 with a 419 loader. If we leave our bucket elevated or in the air, over a 12 to 18 hour period it drops to the ground. For example, we leave the bucket up above the hood (36" off of the ground) and in 12 hours the bucket will be on the ground. Is this normal?

If we remember correctly it did not do this when we purchased it new. The JD dealer and rep has told us this is acceptable and normal.

MOST loaders will have some leakdown, and i have seen some that will stay up for hours with no leakdown. they say it is acceptable for it to leakdown. am not that faimilair with the 790 but it does not seem excessive PERHAPS SOME JD OWNERS WILL be able to advise you better.

Some leakdown is considered normal - as long as it is within spec. Here's a link to a Deere page with the 'official' method of testing - and some sample acceptable leakdown rates. Your 419 is not listed but you could take it that you should be in this ballpark:

Just out of curiousity...why would any one want to leave their loaders extended?
I always drop mine down when the engine is off, or the machine is going to set idle .

Not really sure I know what you folks' intent is here...

I am not sure why, other than to see if it will remain extended. I don't guess we have a legitimate reason. Just curious...

I just hate it when people leave their loaders up in the air. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I alway have to walk around a tractor and I always hit my head when the loader is left up. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

My New Holland TC29D will drop also. It is normal for every model.

leakdown is common for any make/model of loader no matter how old or new. and will get gradually worse the older it gets. the reason for leaving the loader up in the air is to keep pressure on the seals. without this pressure the seals may become loose enough to have a slow leak.

Interesting concept...can't say I've ever seen a loader left up when the tractor engine is off.
Seems too dangerous to me, since the loader would freefall if someone hit the joystick when climbing onboard, or egressing.

My old 670 never had leaking seals..after about 12, 13 years of use.

if you think about it, it makes sense. many mechanics around this area very strongly believe this. i have always left the 3 pt. up on my tractors when ihave cultivators, hillers, shredders, etc. hooked up. it is dangerous but usually i set it about 6 inches off the ground and the same with the loader. loaders arent that heavy compared to how much the cylinders can lift, so there really isnt that much pressure on the seals.
