Hello all. I am interested in installing the rear mount hydraulic kit (part # BM18005??) on my 790. I have talked to my local dealer and he has never installed one of these and is unsure of a few questions. 1. Does this kit include a second control lever or does it use the scv lever ? 2. Can i use the loader while also having something attached that would use the rear hydraulics? 3. Can the 3ph be used at the same time, does the rear hydraulic kit disable anything? 4. My dealer seemed to think that while not in use, the rear ports have to have a jumper hose between them??? I know this is a lot of questions, but i don't want to buy the kit and realize it wont do what i want it to do. Does anyone have any experience with this kit and is it relativly easy to install?

thanks for any information
Rick, I need more snow so I can play with the tractor!!

Have you ever install any hydraulics? .... and is this a brand new tractor? Not to be smart, but this sounds like a pig in a poke.../w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I'd find a dealer that's well versed and have them do it. If you've watched/helped someone do it before and you've got help with this one, then go for it... Otherwise, pay the bucks and have a squared away dealer do it.

Two reasons, first don't give anyone any reason to "void" your warranty... second not many people will step in on a "basket case" installation and finish it... and if they do... be prepared for BIGGER BUCKS. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

John, installing the hydraulic kit is not the main issue at this
time, i used to rebuild hydraulic pumps and motors for skid loaders (its been awhile though !). I did just get the toy, er tractor, in december, when i talked to one of the mechanics at the shop he said if i get the kit, he will look over the instructions before i do anything and recommend if it should be done in the shop or my garage with cold ones ready after the project. Either way, i am more concerned with what the end results will be and what it affects on the tractor. Thanks for the reminder on the warranty, i have never bought anything new before and worried about a warranty, in fact one of the reasons i bought green is because the dealer is only a half a mile away and parts and service is close by.

Rick.

John, in my opinion that's only partially true and usually indicates that the guy who's leary of the basket case doesn't know himself how to do the job. For example: When I first started repairing mechanics' air tools, I hated to get those basket cases (but did get them) because I wanted to take them apart myself to see where everything came from originally. But now, I love it when they try to fix it themselves first; saves me time if they've already taken it apart. And sometimes it does cost them more, but not in labor, only if they broke or lost some of the parts trying to get the tool apart (which ain't unusual).

There are 2 separate kits providing different capabilities. The one you mention (BM18005) is needed to install a backhoe which has its own control valves. It consists of an outlet and an inlet coupler at the rear with a flexible hose to connect them when the backhoe is not installed. There is also a small plug that has to be installed in the 3 point hitch cylinder to route oil to the rear port--this requires some effort to install. The second kit (BM18046) provides a set or rear quick couplers. It is simply a set of hoses that are routed from one set of front couplers (also used for the loader) to the rear in order to control a rear implement. When connected the loader cannot be used. If you want to retain use of the loader and simultaneously control a rear hydraulic cylinder, an additional control valve is required. JD doesn't offer a kit for that. You would use the backhoe kit to first get pressurized oil to the rear of the tractor, and then route lines from there to a separate control valve you purchase independently and mount somewhere convenient to the operators platform. You would also have to provide the hoses and rear couplers for the rear implement.

The BM18005 kit is used also for hydraulic attachments that have there own control valves, I have this kit on my 790 for the backhoe but I also use it to operate a log splitter when I don,t have the backhoe on. I had my dealer Install mine so except for the coupler and hose I'm not sure what else comes with the kit.

Sorry, when I read that, my confidence level of that dealer went down the tubes… and gee whiz… if that JD dealer/mechanic who does this for a living everyday “didn’t know”, well…?

not many people will step in on a "basket case" installation and finish it... and if they do... be prepared for BIGGER BUCKS

Bird, it’s been my experience… the “inexperienced” with all good intentions ends up routing hoses backwards, mounting parts “wrongly”, inadvertently causing “hidden” or “unknown” damage (of course unintentional) , etc. Being in today’s business… Time is Money , now the customer has to first pay “someone else” to undue things, redo things, possibly repair other things and “then” get the “original” problem resolved.

Maybe, it’s been a few of life’s experiences… that’s made me react this way, I apologize… I would hate to see Rick or anyone else fall into that pit.

I have a JD790, and added the rear hydraulic kit last fall. The instructions are excellent, and if followed, installation is easy, took about 2 hours taking my time. I'm not a machanic but not afraid of following good instructions. My tractor already had the SCV to installation was easy. Had to remove the pipe from the SCV to the 3 point, and replace with two pipes, one from the SCV to the rear and the other from the 3 point to the rear. Only two things to watch out for, on the SCV one of the adapters that the pipe screws into started to back out on removal, and when finished my 3 point wouldn't function, kinda scared me, but you must crank up the rpm to get enough pressure to open the relief to let the air pass through the system. I added the rear hydraulics so I would have a place to attach T-N-T.

I went over this with Halsey a while back. He said the kit comes with all the parts required... for both the "with SCV" and the "without SCV" setup. I've gotten the service manual, and it shows it really well. This is something I am definately going to do myself (unless my dealer is willing to do it for free /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif). The only thing I can't recall right now is wether the return hose comes with the kit? Absoultely have to have either the return hose or an open-centered system attached. Without one or the other you're left with a wide open place in your system /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif.

Mark, the kit comes with a hose and quick disconnects to complete the loop between the two pipes. It alsp must be used with an open center valve setup or the hydraulic would be in continous relief.
