Generator Jinma PTO Generator

Well, it's that time of the year when tractor talk turns to snowplows and PTO Generators. And as luck (or misfortune) would have it, my cheapo generator is nearing its demise a mere 6 months after I bought it. Luckily, it's still under warranty, so, tomorrow I return it to Costco for a full refund (gotta love their return policy )

So, now I need to find something. In my searches, I ran across the following page of Jinma implements.

And specificially, this PTO generator.

It appears this is a heavy 4 pole ST Generator mounted on a pulley/flywheel, just like the Jinma WC-6 chipper. I don't like the color,but that's easily fixed. Once I find out how much these are, I'm sure I'll consider fabricating something, and I'll be sure to post pictures.

Questions:

Has anyone seen one of these in the US? Does anyones know who imports or sells them? Any idea if it incorporates a flywheel in the 'box'?

I did a little research on them awhile back and tried to find someone in the states that had imported them and had no luck.

I have seen some other pictures of that generator and there is / was no flywheel. It was just like the one we used on our farm ......... the PTO shaft went straight to the gen.

According to the parts guy at china****** chinese make good diesel, crappy electrical...

I have a genset with a chinese diesel, but the alternator is English...

One issue for LONG term. The govenors on gensets are typically tighter than those on tractors etc. The variance in the 60 cy power can play hob with electronic speed controls on motorized equipment and with power factor on any motorized stuff. For short term it may make little differance, but if you have frequent long term outages.... you may wind up stressing stuff with the fluctuating frequency. AVR takes care of the voltage not frequency

@Ronald, I can certainly understand the lack of luck finding alot of info.

@psj12, Burnaby BC is about a days drive, and the picture on ebay gives me a little more info. Unfortunatly, the price and exchange rate isn't very favorable now.

@Cidertom, you're spot on. Quality is a huge concern, especially when there are no dealers that are backing the product and making the product conform to a certain spec. I understand the issues around voltage and frequency.

I think I've talked myself into to building something like this but to my own design and for less than half the price. Of course, pictures will follow.

I have been thinking about putting together my own PTO Gen also using a ST gen head. Something along these lines, markpto.
What I am having trouble with is the pulleys. I need to increase the speed from 540RPM to 1800RPM. Increase of 3.33. Most recommend using the ribbed serpentine type belts as they can easily transfer the needed HP to the gen head without going to multiple V belts. I cannot find an affordable source that carries them yet.
Any suggestions?

If you can't find serpentine belts, properly adjusted V belts will handle the power. A speed increase like that shouldn't be a big deal for V belts. Or you could just buy the one Charlz is showing, as it appears ready to go, with no modifications needed. Just how many belts are required will depend on your hp versus the load.
If you build one like Markpto, make sure you put some sort of guard on the exposed moving parts. Working in the dark, or with flashlights might tend to make them extra dangerous.

JamesH, I'm surprise I haven't ran across that page on UP, but I like how it gives some details. However, I don't like that the load isn't centered, and it's designed for a PTO that runs at 900 RPM.

In the design I'm working on, I plan on using dual v belt pulleys, mainly because I can find them at surplus center. But from what I've read, the serpentine belts and pulleys would be availble from wrecking yards and autoparts stores.

On a different, but related project, I was looking at PTO driven compressors, and I found this image.

The common theme between this, the PTO driven generator and the Jinma chipper is that a larger pulley is driven at about PTO level, and then the compressor/generator/chipper is driven vertically superior to the PTO shaft.
