John Deere 2320
Hi All,

I have the opportunity to purchase a set of fairly new used turf tires and wheels off a John Deere 2720. Would these work on my tractor. I know the clearance my be close, but I have measured it a ton and think they will fit. I have the opportunity to try them first to see. My real question is will this cause any concern with the MFWD (4WD) system I have. The current tires are R4's which measure 32.8" in diameter on the rears and 22.6" on the fronts. The 2720 are 36" on the rears and 24" on the fronts. Should I be concerned with doing this? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I think - since you have 4WD - that you are better off to stay away from this. Your owners manual should indicate if alternate size tires are advisable and if so, what sizes. Its very likely to cause damage to the 4WD system. If you don't have an owners manual - go talk to an informed JD dealer and see what they say.

Your current setup the rears are 145% (32.8/22.6) the size of the fronts. The other set works out to 150% (36/24) meaning the ratio change front to rear would be 3% taller (150/145=1.03). It is not uncommon for ag machines to have final drive ratio vs tire size work out to have the front travel faster, so this might balance things a little.

The effect of this would be that more load would be placed on the rears (good) but if the *actual* final travel speed of the tires is taller in the rear, it will make it drive squirmy.

I am seriously considering deliberately doing something similar. The faster travel speed of my front means it is always trying to take more load, and I have broken final drive gears three times over the last ten years or so. Obviously I wasn't being nice to it to break them, but still. The mismatched front to rear travel ratios in some ag machines makes me a little walleyed. Just seems wrong.
