Engine turns over well and actually starts almost immediately and runs for a few seconds before dying and then I have to crank starter for quite a long while before it will finally start. I do not run starter for more than ten seconds/approximately at a time. There have been a couple of occasions after a number of attempts that the battery is depleted to the point that I have to jump start. This only occurs when the tractor has been setting for a week or two. It never occurs if running every few days.
From a layman's point of view, it is like the fuel system has lost its prime and the fuel line has to be completely "recharged" before engine will run.

I agree that more than likely fuel is draining back to tank letting air in fuel line. You could try installing a check valve to prevent fuel drain back.
You have a minor leak in your fuel system. If it is functioning properly the fuel will not drain back. You need to check all connections and hoses including the return and make sure there are no leaks. Keep in mind that a connection or hose does not have to be leaking diesel to be leaking air. Check the filter too.

Common problem with the 5X25 series, there is a flapper gasket in the filter prime pump, it either has dirt in it or needs to be replaced. Very common problem. Try taking it apart, and there is probably something in the one way valve that operates the prime hand pump knob...
