I just got this tractor after having a lemon of a 2013 4520..literally only have 60hours on it and have had it in the shop 6 times. Im a little concerned with the tier 4 tractor. What are the known problems with tier 4 and do you have to put in any special fuel or anything? Thank you

Hmmmm... Seems like questions better asked BEFORE the purchase.

Have you checked the manual? Or asked the dealer rep? I would imagine that either of those sources would provide the answers to your questions.

Good luck with the new tractor!

I did not actually get the tractor yet..but I did message the dealer and he said he wasnt sure and would look into it. I looked up tier 4 engines on the internet search and it kept mentioning adding something to the fuel...I hope.this is not the case...thats the whole reason I bought my 4520 in 2013 was to dodge the new tier..makes me sick that I have to already get a new tractor

You shouldn't need to add anything but quality diesel fuel.

I believe the tier 4 engines in the JD use common rail direct injection, and a DPF (diesel particulate filter) with auto regeneration.

You should just be able to use it like normal.

If it sits for 3 weeks or more it wont start, they tried telling me I had 3 bad brand new batteries in a row, which common sense says is not the case. Then about 5 different times now either the backhoe cylinder has blew up or had a huge leak coming from it. Both problems they cannot seem to fix and ive had this thing in the shop more then I have used it...and with a very hefty tra tor payment it just makes me sick.

Interesting, sounds to me like there was a parasitic drain on the battery, not a "battery" problem. To me that sounds like the dealer did not diagnose the problem.

Can you tell us more about the backhoe cylinder problem? Thank you.

Well anytime I used my backhoe I would either be doing somekind of light digging..two of the times I heard a huge boom and the backhoe stopped working the other times there were just leaks from the cylinder. The tried repairing the cylinder twice then finally replaced it after it didnt work..now it just leaks

Each cylinder should withstand the maximum pressure that the hydraulic pump combined with the FEL relief valve puts out. I am wondering if the cylinder was marginal and in some way the FEL relief was not set right and did not dump excessive pressure to the tank. The hydraulic system's pressure relief should have prevented a "huge boom" and a damaged cylinder.

I am worried that your dealer is the problem, not the tractor. In which case, you might be setting yourself up for "round 2" with your new tractor. How long have they been in business and how experienced are their mechanics?
