X740
Bought a 2010 with 1700 hours for $3400. Good deal? Anything I should worry about? How will it do in the winter? Block heater maybe? Want to buy a snowblower to put on the front also. Any tips and tricks will be appreciated.

Welcome to TBN

Which model JD did you buy? Is it the x740 in your profile?
Put up some photo's for us to see. We like pics.

Do you know the model snowblower you want for this tractor?

I bought an X740 in 2010 give or take. Great tractor with 1100 hours on it so far.

Had to change steering knuckles which is minor. Need to keep radiator and oil cooler fairly clean of grass or dust or tractor may overheat in hot weather in tall grass.

Great machine for blowing snow or rototilling or whatever else will fit on my 3 pt hitch. I loaded the rear tires with antifreeze and put weights on axle for winter jobs and side hill stability.

You will really like it. Not sure what the value currently is, but that price seems in the ball park.

I used it in Wisconsin for 3 years or so, Kept it in an unheated pole shed. Always started but if -10F or below I would warm it up a bit with a torpedo heater. But either way it always started.

I had a diesel X740 for years, and loved it - until the problem. It was everything I needed (as I had a 4WD diesel 650 with a snowblower and 3 point mower as well.

The X740 engine and transmission were excellent. I had constant nuisance electrical problems, including starting. I always got it going again, but sometimes it was tiresome. It was a little too computerized to diagnose simply. The problem was that it caught fire in the middle of the night. Sadly, when it did that, it was in my airplane hangar with the airplane, the JD650, my Polaris 6X6, and my workshop. I had good insurance, but would really rather have not had the problem in the first place.

So, my advise is to maintain the electrical system to perfection, have any problems promptly and properly repaired, and consider disconnecting the battery if in any doubt.

I bough the 1025R to replace both tractors, and it is fine. I would happily have another X740 for lighter work, but I'd always have a sideways glace at the electrical system....
