Looking for some vehicle storage and a small upstairs apartment to stay in on weekends. Where going to have a house built this year but decided to pay off the land first.

Seen some very nice kit barns online and was wondering what I could expect for around $40K. I can do all the finish work myself but would need to sub out the dry-in construction.

Considered a trailer but we need a place to put the tractor, boat, camper and jeep. Thinking a standard 1.5 story barn with a shed roof off each side would work well.

Appreciate any feedback on my plan and options.

Regular barn? Are you talking Gabrel roof? 4 sided roof? I think 40K will get you a pretty nice barn.

Something along these lines. I'm all for saving money, I was calculating the costs based at $40/sq.ft. for a 25 x 40 barn.

There are many threads about people putting up a pole barn by yourself. One thing you might consider is doing most of work yourself and then contracting someone to put the roof trusses up. Since you want a usable second story, there will be more than usual and be built pretty stout.
I would do a search or browse the "projects" form.
Huskerplowboy is doing a barn right now and posting progress.

I found this sight or company which the web sight actually gives you prices with them complete. Not sure if I read if they were weld up or kits they are using. You can also choose to do your own foundation or have it figured. The web sight is Texas Metal Buildings, Texas Steel Buildings, Texas Barn, Texas Barns. It should give you a good idea. I also read a thread yesterday that someone said that steal prices are down but did not think these metal company with kits have lowered their prices yet.

I am hoping to build a 60x60 next year and then build a 1500 or so home inside till that and the land is paid off and then build our house.

back in 2002 i did similar dry-in barn, gambrel roof, 38x50, with 12' eve/lean too roof on one side which put it at 50x50. t-111 siding shingle roof, pole construction. right at 20K with roof & 2nd floor on 16" centers. 2x12 floor joists which req a middle support poles down the 38' width. put up by Amish which was OK, DURA-BUILT matched the price & construction back then which I think would get me a warranty & should have went that way.

still it is not done as I have had some issues with my health but barn is nice just the same.
