Kodiak Rough Cut Mower ?s

So I have a 60inch Kodiak standard duty rough cut mower. I've been told to check the gearbox for lube-remove the plug and inspect for EP-0 grease level.

There are two "plugs" on the gearbox; one is a small plug with a square end, found about 1/2 way up the gearbox, the other is the plug that is often called the breather. So which one is the plug to check? Also, EP-0 grease?

You want to check the level using the plug that's half way up the gear box.

Thanks. I've looked at 4 dealers and one oil/gas seller. No one seems to have EP-0 grease. One dealer suggested using heavy gear lube to top it up if required.

I defer to the experts, but I believe John Deere corn head grease fits the bill.

Who told you that? Have you checked the owner's manual or contacted the manufacturer to determine the recommended gear box lube for it?

The reason I ask is that most rotary cutter gear boxes use regular gear oil, such as an 80w90 or 80w140 gear oil. Usually, the thicker greases like corn head grease are used for gear boxes that have leaky seals, and it apparently works to lube the gear box without leaking out of the faulty seal. But I'm not aware of any rotary cutters that come with something that thick from the factory.

Called Kodiak and EP-0 is what they put in at the factory and is their recommendation. It's also in the manual that I downloaded.

I've got a 5 foot kodiak I use for trimming trails and food plots in the deer woods. I use regular gear oil, BUT the manual does call for ep 0 and you can find it on the shelf with the pto shafts and parts at Tractor Supply. It's in the section with hitch pins, pto shafts and u joints.

I think you are looking for Corn Head grease. That is what I use in mine.

you can usually find ep 00 grease at lawnmower dealers, generally in quart squeeze bottles. ( stens, snapper brands, etc. )

ep0 grease is available from John deer dealers ( cornhead grease ).

CNH dealers usually have a ep-0 lube as well.
