Just changed fluids and filters on the tractor for normal maintenance. I changed the hydraulic suction and HST filters and drained all hydraulic fluid.

I put in three gallons of Super UDT2 fluid and ran the system by turning steering wheel max both directions and cycled the bucket numerous times. Then I checked the hydraulic dip stick and it shows full.

Manual says the hydraulic fluid capacity is 4 gallons. So my question us: after draining system (I am sure I drained it properly), and changing both filters, would the system have "retained" one gallon of fluid?

I will operate it some today and recheck but I do believe I operated it enough to cycle the fluid through the system and fill both filters. What is your experience?

The real question is how much fluid did you drain out? That's the only way to tell if you're dealing with some left in there, or you have air pockets that need to be worked out.

I'd say watch the levels over the next few days of operation, and top off as needed.

I do recall that some of the B series have multiple plugs to remove to drain all the fluid. So verify that you did that if applicable. It's not always obvious.

By the way, if it's the 50 hour maintenance, you don't need to change the fluid, just top off what spilled when removing filters (and if you do it on an incline, you won't spill more than a couple drops). That way you don't really need to deal with air pockets or other hassles.

Thanks s219,

The tractor has 470 hours so it's third time around. I have a large drain pan and I guess it looked like 3 gallons but can't be precise. There are 3 drain plugs. I ran it 20 minutes driving around the yard and steered hard both ways and raised and lowered bucket plenty. Checked fluid again after shutdown (30 minute wait) and dip stick reads full.

Tractor has no leaks and I never have to add any fluids between service.
