On removing the belly-mower the mid-PTO coupling and shaft was left coupled to the mid-PTO. On starting the tractor, the PTO coupling shaft proceeded to destroy the filter, which broke off the filter screw-on nipple. The skid pan was dented and the mid-PTO bearing might be damaged. Has anyone attempted this repair and can anyone provide any tips on how to proceed?

I broke that on my B26TLB a year or so ago. Seems like there was only on bolt holding the filter housing on but it was a PIA the get the oil line back on. The threaded nipple for the filter is all part of a plate that attached to the reservoir with just an Oring for a seal and one bolt to hold it to the reservoir.
The housing was $125 IIRC at Kubota dealer. It was about 35F when I finally got the part in so it wasn't fun trying to get all those nuts started with cold fingers.

Gary, thanks for the encouraging post! I now know it's doable.

I didn't have to worry with draining the sump as it all leaked out on the ground when I broke it. It did take about 6 gallons of hydraulic oil to refill it but after getting the new filter housing in place, hooking up all the hydraulic lines, putting on a new filter, filling the reservoir, everything worked as it should. I did let it idle a minute or two prior to moving the HST pedal so all the oil got to circulating properly.
Some folks here on TBN report total failure of hydraulics after an oil change, I have no idea why that would happen though.

My BIL broke his also pushing into some limbs and it was a real pain to get to on his New Holland plus there was some springs and steel balls internal on it (check valves I suppose). I don't know if yours has check valves (mine didn't) but be careful when removing the housing so you don't loose any parts just in case.

I will be stripping the HST down this Thanksgiving weekend. Will determine all the parts I need, and hopefully have everything together the following weekend. Will keep y'all appraised of the situation.
