Looking at tractors and thought I had narrowed it down to the L3400. However, today I find a MX5000 that will cost only 500 more than a L3400. The MX is two wheel drive not four. I don't need four wheel drive, at least I dont' think I do.

1. Is there that much difference in 2 vs 4 wheel drive?
2. Will these tractors hold their resale value equally or will one out perform the other?
3. What would you do?

Thanks

I purchased a L4400 last summer. I then "upgraded" to an mx5000, a slightly bigger machine with some ag features (telescoping rear arms, etc.) It was a 4WD. The jump from a L3400 to an MX 5000 is signifigant in terms of size and HP. Larger frames give better leverage in FEL operation (does the mx have a FEL?) The 4WD vs 2WD is also a big trade off. I am told that in terms of pulling, 4WD will give you around 15-20% (?) benefit in terms of hp. So...nothing's simple. There are many people out there satifsied with small framed 4 WD with lots of bells & whistles (though the straight L series is no frill). As for me? the MX was still too small for my 120 A mountain farm, I now have an M7040 and am well satisfied. Be careful to weigh out all options first and not be bitten by the "next size larger" bug after purchase....it means we either misjudged the job at hand, or have too much time on our hands. I certainly am no exception By the way, the MX is currently under redesign like the grand L series. bb

I have a 6' Befco boxblade (800 lbs.) that gives my L2800 a hard time in 2wd when on a hill. In 4wd it just walks right along.
I've had a few situations where the machine would have been stuck, or slid into a hole, or spun its rear wheels due to a load. 4wd saved the day enough times for me to say I'd not get a tractor without it. Not to mention it's usefulness when it snows.

4wd costs several thousand dollars, maybe even $5000. IMHO it is often worth it.

Hard to predict resale value. 4wd is a plus, but generally larger tractors will hold value better.

Question for me is, what size do you really need? I think it would be a mistake to buy bigger just because you can afford it, rather than have a use for it.

Wisc,

A whole new conversation could start here, but what will you be using the tractor for?

Family man
I'll just be discing and bush hogging about 10-15 acres.
I appreciate everyone's opinions. It is really helpful for a guy like me who knows nothing about tractors.

I have 4WD and was debating whether I really needed it but I sure am glad I got it. Just about every time I use the tractor I have to engage 4WD to get unstuck from situation. I guess it depends on where you use the tractor but I think 4WD for a small tractor is a must.
