All, I was directed to post this here to try and find some assistance.

I have a 3830 HST with cruise control (on the left, next to the range selector). Recently purchased it used (well used), and I've been putting it through its rounds.

One of the things bothering me is that, since I purchased it, I can't get the cruise control to move at all. It seems frozen in the "off" position. I took a look at the assembly on the tractor and see the linkage attaching to a rod and level, but I don't want to disassemble things until I have a better idea of what the moving parts are, and what is most likely to be frozen up. Any tips or advice on this? I did disconnect the rod to quickly validate that the level itself was not the issue.

1st thing to check is the cruise control cable. Likely corroded, frozen if parked outside.

Here is links to the cruise control parts diagram. You mave have to establish account (free) at Messicks to to be able to open the link.

Thanks for that. I popped the cable off of the connecting rod, and I can't get it to move at all, so it may need replaced. I did notice, however, that even after disconnecting the cable, I still couldn't get the parts before the cable/up to the level to move.

Do you know: should I be able to move the cruise control level (and its parts) at all times, or does something have to actuate it?

Sorry for the late reply, went down with the stomach flu Sunday.

Not sure what you mean by “level.” Initially assumed it to be a typo.

The cruise control, as I understand, is nothing more than a friction
restrained mechanical connection to the HST speed control pedal.

Sounds like the speed control pedal is working fine. Only thing else there between the cruise control lever on the left side of the seat and the cable is the friction disks and plates shown here (Kubota L383DT / GST / HST (Dual Traction, 4wd / Glide Shift Transmission / Hydrostatic Transmission) Parts Diagrams). Maybe to much friction (i.e., froze up/corroded).

Yep, sorry that was a typo. Lever*

Your understanding was the same as my assumption. My only thought was that I wondered if there was something that might keep the cruise control from being moved unless the speed control pedal was pushed forward, or similar.

Looks like I may need to take apart the assembly to see if there is some corrosion keeping things from moving, and I suspect I need to replace the cable either way. I need to replace my rear tires, so maybe that would be a good opportunity to access that area and disassemble it. Thanks for the help and tips.

On my HST, cruise control lever movement is independent of the speed pedal control position. Not sure if that is exactly the same on earlier and later model year production.

on the 3830 they are linked, according to the workshop manual. "Because cruise adjusting rod and the HST pedal are connected by the connecting shaft, the HST pedal is moved and HST becomes forward position."

I think we are saying the same thing. The cruise control lever advances the speed control pedal in the forward direction, but movement of the cruise control lever is not limited by speed control pedal position. I have to admit, I have no idea what would happen if the speed pedal was in reverse while trying to advance the cruise control lever. Never even thought about it until now.

Also...make sure there is a spring connected underneath.
