We are replacing our carpet in our living room/dining area.Which will hold up better nylon or polyester carpet ?? What are the pros & cons of each? We want to go with nothing cheap but higher end carpet and pad.

Can’t beat how long nylon lasts. We carpeted our family room addition last year and got a very heavy weight carpet, still looks new. I will look up the brand and type and post it later.

We carpeted our living room when we built the house in 1982. It's a low nap, industrial grade carpet. It's light brown. Does not show mud( when it dries ), dirt or dust. It's still OK after 38 years here out in the country. It's a polyester/nylon blend. I vacuum at least once a week. The dealer cautioned to keep the dirt, dust, mud vacuumed up. Accumulations will cut & wear the fibers.

Unbelievable - I went thru our file of bills to build the house here. Found the receipt for the carpeting. It's called Berbertron Carmel. The company that sold/installed the carpet is no longer in business.

Gracious - the carpeting we purchased in 1982 was $20 a square yard. I thought that was expensive. At $5 a square foot that equals $45 a square yard.

We bought our house bran new 25 years ago and wanted to upgrade to tile as they were building our house. The "designer" said the price would be 25K and the "cheap contractor grade" carpet won't last more than 5 years.

Well, that was 25 years ago and the carpet looks just fine. The wife puts runners over high traffic areas and once a year at holiday time we get a good cleaning.

Seriously, I think this carpet will outlast me

So for what it's worth I'm wondering if "high end" carpet is just a ploy to get people to spend more money. Don't buy by price buy by what you like, if it's a lower price don't sweat it.

I haven't bought carpet in quite awhile and don't know the answer to your question, but I wanted to comment on the star rating of the different carpets. First, it's not a universal rating, so the lesser brands tend to over rate their carpets, while the bigger names like Shaw have a more universal rating system. The other thing that a friend who sells flooring told me is that a 3 star carpet is the exact same carpet as the 4 and 5 star carpet, they just extend the warrantee longer for each additional star rating for the additional cost of the carpet.

As a contractor, I remove carpet all the time. I have never found a floor under the carpet that was clean. In ever case, there is a layer of dust, sand and dirt under the carpet. It is impossible to vacuum up what gets down through the carpet, and even through the pad. And then there is what pets that pee in the house do to the pad of a carpet. Lets just say it's nasty, and impossible to clean up. Usually they keep going back to that same spot and it's a never ending battle to minimize how nasty it gets.

I like carpet in the bedroom. We have 4 Akita's in our house. All the carpet is being torn out and replaced with tile. Tile is cold, it's hard, and it's easy to clean. The cleaning part is our priority and we're learning to live with area rugs. We're even going to remove the floating engineered hardwood flooring and replace it with tile. Everything is going to be tile!!!

Our carpet was installed in 1979, and always looked great,,
on a whim, I was in a surplus building materials shop back in 2008, and found enough Goncalo Alves real hardwood flooring to do our entire house.
This is the same wood that Smith and Wesson used to make beautiful grips out of for revolvers,,

Well, in the 11 years we have had the floor, it still looks like new,, cleaning is mostly a dust mop.
Before the wood floors, I was ready to spend over $2,000 for a built-in vacuum system.
Since the carpets are gone,, I think most of our allergies are gone also,,,

Our total installed cost was $2.25 per square foot,, I hit the jackpot on flooring that year.
The building trade had almost stopped, so, materials, and labor was CHEAP,,

These Brazilian hardwoods are actually harder than oak, and naturally waterproof,
I left a piece of the wood outside on a picnic table for two years, all the wood did was naturally darken.

This coffee table I found a pic of on line is an almost exact match to what the floors in our house looks like today,,

Amen to that. I wish the first cave man who threw a bearskin in front of the fire should have been shot. There is no "no maintenance" floor but a carpet has to be the most maintenance intensive thing going. I have carpet in the living room but only because the wife insisted on it.

I love CARPET. Never liked the idea of living in a gymnasium! Cold and stark!

Upstairs here we installed used carpet that had been ripped out of my Dads Offices back in the early 80s. It's still great. It's not Nylon but a softer material, (maybe Olufun) very short pile. A family friend that installed it, stressed to use high quality underpad. It's on coreslab.

Downstairs is solution Dyed Nylon. Also a commercial carpet. Good looking, but not nearly as comfortable.
